hehe, I'm not happy enough with my own game to do that I think. Then again, If I was super happy with my game maybe that would be a reason not to as well? An interesting conundrum.

A short goals post

I'm quite unhappy at the moment for not dealing with the situation I'm in better. I've totally let not finding an apartment get to me and stop me with the great progress I was

making keeping up my hours. It's just so hard somehow for me to grind in unfamiliar locations at friends apartments etc. I didn't need to though, I've actually had time to spend on poker but just haven't, when my flow gets interrupted its terrible news for me. So this said I decided to post some preliminary goals for the coming year that I will hopefully edit in the future:

  • Don't stop any processes or projects part done. Keep going, don't give up!
  • Organise my laptop and bookmarks and don't let them get cluttered again!
  • Organise my life. Well, there isn't much I can do right now, but I put this in just in case It is needed!
  • Keep looking for a better way to work on my game and actually do it! Over and over, even if it hurts mentally. This joins up with my first point.
  • Become a mental game master. This means playing as much as I aim to and even eliminating all those little reactions that tilt me more (like saying 'Yea of course' when getting badbeat)
  • Prioritise enjoyment while playing and making good decisions. Keep learning how to be fine with larger and larger losses (losing sessions have to get bigger when you move up as well, its not just the winning ones)
  • You may notice there are no financial goals. I think that will just come if I succeed with the others. Will see if I edit these later or not.

I can certainly relate to the "Yea of course". Often also "Of course you do." :f_rolleyes:

    GL achieving your goals!

you know, to where they respect your raises.

on a more serious note, those look like some very good and worthwhile goals to me.
how about trying to get better than me at mental-game? my recent sessions/months probably make that goal look more attainable, right? speaking of which, i got a replacement mouse today after damaging my current one a few days ago. going back to the old logitech m100, the really cheap and basic but reliable one that i bought about 10 of back in the day, instead of a buying a gaming mouse.

2014 was quite turbulent and overal very difficult and unpleasant for me. Pretty much the only thing that went ok was poker. Of course I'm going to try to put that behind me now.

    2015 Goals/Plans (subject to refinement)

    Poker

    :diamond: volume:
    100 hours every month; 20 days play per month, preferably split into two 2.5hour sessions;
This is what i want an average month to be like. Illness or travel might make that impossible, but then I still want to get 1200 hours total for the year.

    :diamond: attain Blackmember status;
Not really important, but would still be nice despite the blackmember perks not being what they were 4-5 years ago. I'm at about 298 000 points right now, already got 27k this year, and I think reaching 500k this year is very realistic.

    :diamond: monetary:
make more money than in 2014

    Other Goals

:diamond: complete 50 drawings, drawing as regularly as possible (I pencil-draw portraits)

    :diamond: go climbing/bouldering 90 times

:diamond: go running 100 times (possible mountain-climbing or touring skiing would count towards this)

:diamond: Maintain good general health, not just fitness. I've been ill about 6-7 times in the last year, and I have some kind of permanent cold. Hopefully I can get healthy by taking really good care of my nose and throat.

I think my friends think it's fairly unlikely that I'll do all of this. We'll see.

Nice looking goals there. It looks like we finally have an apartment and will be moving in on Wednesday... However, we won't have internet on that day. Currently in a hostel which has internet but don't know if its good enough for poker. Will see.

Yess! I finally moved into an apartment! We even got internet set up the day after moving in! Unfortunately it took so long that I'm going back to England in a week and I have no chance of either

    A) Making Diamond this month
    B) Doing well on the unibet rake-race this month.

Add to this I'm also going on holiday for a week near the beginning of Feb I feel a little like face-palming

Oh well, I'm glad I am finally going to be able to get back on track with learning and playing _biggrin: Hope the rest of the year treats me good _cool:

24 hour jouney = exhausting. Spent 1/3 nights in England before my next journey, this time a shorter journey from London To Vancouver.

The travelling will be over soon, just 10 days or so till I can get back into a regular rhythm!

Oh yes, Kruppe may put in a post soon!

There have been a couple of days with a lot of nl1k action on some of my sites recently, and it's gone very badly. Last friday was the worst financial day I've had in absolute terms, losing over €10k. It was also very bad mental game-wise, with various factors contributing to tilt. And exactly one week after that, I had a day that was even worse mentally.

Sadly, I must face the fact that I'm on a mental game downswing. I haven't maintained and sustained the level of mental game I need. So i'm going to need to put a lot of effort into improving and sustaining my mental game again.

I'm going to take a break from poker for several days at least and make some plans for better mental game before I start again. I'll post here about my plans and my thoughts and analysis of my mental game issues.

I was planning on playing again today, which will be the first time since I went on a break, although I feel pretty fatigued right now, so I'm not sure whether I'll play.

I haven't yet made as much progress with my mental-game stuff as I'd like. I'll just list some things that contributed to tilt specifically during the worst session, last friday, and in general, with some thoughts on handling each thing. A lot of these things are inter-related in various ways. Some are arguably different aspects of the same thing, and are related to difficulties I had against a specific type of grinder.

    :diamond:A
    confidence issues in HUNL:
Quite a lot of my NL1k play on those two days ended up being HU against 2 specific regs.
In recent months I've played a lot of matches of various lengths at sizeable stakes against fairly good regulars/professionals, and overall they've gone very badly. This has caused a general loss of confidence in my HUNL game. It's also making me think that maybe my meta-strategic habits have been changing and the changes have been in the wrong direction and/or too extreme/far: My game selection becoming less strict, so that I now sometimes play fairly long matches without being certain about having an edge and do this at relatively high stakes, wheras in the past I would have only played a very short match and at lower stakes until I was certain I had a substantial edge. Also, I've increasingly been playing HUDless and without analysing stats, partly due to issues with HEM.
    :club: countering A:
I need to slightly tighten my game selection until I have more confidence again.
I'm going to train HUNL at zoomHU on stars, starting with some nl50 today.
I'm going to get a new PC with working tracking software before I play another match against a possibly tough professional at relatively high stakes.

    :diamond: B
noticing that a specific opponent is better than I had estimated
This has happened in a lot of the HU matches that went badly. One player in particular is an NL400 SH grinder whom I had played a lot with and had a fairly solid picture of as somewhat tight/passive, generally harmless, whilst also prone to sometimes making big mistakes/bad bluffs. I ended up playing a lot of HU NL1k against him friday before last, and it went much worse than expected. I suppose I ran very cold for a while, but the real problem is that I started seeing his play in a different light: I got the feeling that his general tight/passive play was actually relatively close to unexploitable, and that his moves were very calculated. I had the feeling that my perceived edge had been an illusion, that I had mis-judged the player, and that I actually wasn't making money off him.
    this is related to :diamond:B´:
noticing that opponents are getting harder to exploit, not just because they are getting better relative to me, but because they are moving closer to GTO
This is frustrating. It can make me long for the days when everybody was play hyper-exploitatively. It can make me skeptical about the future profitability of poker.
    :club:countering B:
I need to remember that under-estimating players who play a different style to oneself is a common psychological trap.
    :club:countering B´:
I need to remind myself that a) I don't know enough about this to really say how close someone is to GTO, and that b) I can still find ways to exploit most of my opponents very profitably

    :diamond: C
bad or very mediocre play in general, with low focus, far from a-game
Sometimes I am well aware of playing worse than my a-game, and I decide to play or continue playing despite this.
This can be the correct course of action, However, the danger is that this leads to tilt: firstly, it's just generally unpleasant to see myself playing badly or worse than I know I could. Secondly, I might make some critical mistakes that could have been avoided by waiting till I was on my a-game, and then be very upset at myself.
    :club:countering C:
I need to keep reminding myself that it's ok that my worse-than-a-game play may cause mistakes, as my estimation of the EV of playing has taken into account the possibility of such mistakes. And I need to make sure that I'm mentally prepared for making mistakes. If I feel that the next sizeable mistake will make me very unhappy, then I should stop playing.

    :diamond: D
mediocre play vs specific opponents against whom focused play is necessary to realise my perceived edge/superiority
    :club:countering D:
avoid HU with such opponents whilst playing mediocrely at all costs. I have to accept that, even If I think I'm over-all the better player and *should* have an edge, that doens't mean that I have an edge right now.

    :diamond:E
losing a lot of EV in a single hand through a time-out
this can be due to software, internet or simply my taking too long. on friday I timed out purely due to taking too long:
I called a 3bet HU at nl1k with A9o. Board A92 8 X i called a cbet, tank-called the turn, wasting some of my time bank, then ran out of time facing a check on the river, trying to decide on a bet-size. I clicked with about half a second left, it didn't register, and I ended up checking top2 vs AJ that had checked river. This was definitely mainly caused by being off my a-game.
    :club:countering E:
I really just need to make sure this doesn't happen. It's hardly ever happened to me before, which is probably partly why I wasn't careful enough about preventing it from happening. Now that I know I'm capable of timing down like that, I can look out for that.

    :diamond:F
making a large negative adjustment to my longterm expectation
when things go badly during a single session, this can make me re-evaluate how profitable I am in a game in general. Just a couple of costly mistakes during one session can make me adjust my yearly expectation by €20000 or similar, and it can then feel like I've lost much more than just the couple of hundred I just lost through mistakes.
    :club:countering F:
I have to realise that this is in part simply pessimism, and that negativity affects such thoughts in many ways. I also have to remind myself that my original estimates don't pre-suppose perfect play, nor that I am the best player, plus are somewhat conservative and vague anyway. Also, I have to remind myself that I CAN improve, even if right at that moment it just seems like I'm doing the same old dumb shit that only players do who are worse than my previously perceived self.

I need to keep thinking about some of these points, and could already say a lot more about some of them.

Hey Kruppe, if you would like i could do a small number of hands challenge (1-10k hands) without sidebet at 400nl stars or 500nl euros on a euro site and then we could both share our thoughts on each other's play afterwards? No pressure, don't feel obligated to accept or anything.

    hey Willy,

in general I'm interested in something like that, although I'd like to minimize how much rake we pay somehow.
however, as you could gather from my previous post, now is pretty much the worst time for me to do something like that at nl400+ vs a presumably good reg.
probably would do it in a couple of months' time though.

on a different note, my 5 day break from playing has definitely had positive effects. today i started a session despite not really feeling like playing, but i was extremely relaxed and played mostly a-game. :)

    Oh, Hi guys!

I am back in the UK! Not only do I have a desk to work at and am no longer travelling an absolute shitton, but I also have a screen to add on to what was previously just a laptop only set-up! Let the grinding commence!

I think, that to help my persistence / drive a little I shall edit this post with some info on my session timings (and if I can remember HH reviews / video stuff too).

It is Tuesday, just before 7pm and I will do this until Sunday evening. Wonder what sort of target I should set myself.

    1 session: Tu 17th 23:20 40 mins

new edit: Didn't play Wed or Thurs, but have played Fri, Sat and already put in a short session on Sunday (at 2pm lol). Posting sessions didn't work initially, so won't do it this week but might be a good idea for the future. Slowly getting back into the swing of things (jetlag really didn't help me either)

that's a pretty long session. 40 minutes? you might want to cut down, otherwise you'll just burn-out like tom dwan
