If u bet on the turn ure gonna propably do the same on the river no matter which card occure. U wont make him fold pocket pairs, TT, JJ by betting only on the turn (he most likely gonna call), it means u need to be prepared to shoot on the river as well. I wouldn do that if 8 comes in.

I figure you have two options - check back all the streets or bet on the scary card and continue betting

I think we can even bet the flop with two overs and a backdoor nut flushdraw and if he calls, we can plan to continue any doamond, J, Q, K and A. Maybe we would then have to bet the river. Since we decided to check back the flop, which is fine, I believe we have to bet the turn and the river (unimproved), which is a fairly standard and highly profitable play.
