Hello, were 5 players Mp is a tight aggressive please, I decide to call with JJ here to induce the loose aggressive BTN to 3bet, witch he did. So now the question here is to 4 bet or call, I thought about 4betting but i was thinking at the time that MP could have called with a big pair to induce me to 4b shove, so i decided to call, was i thinking above his level? on the flop it isn't great since it hits the LAG BTNs range massive, so i decide to check shove if the TAG MP folkded if he called or raise i was planning to fold.

Looking back over the hand after i think its much better to 4b shove since we are out of position in a Multiway pot, with a hand that can be tricky somtimes

BTN: $12.67
SB: $15.47
BB: $35.79
UTG: $13.21
Hero (CO): $5.00

Pre Flop: ($0.12) Hero is CO with J :spade: J :diamond:
UTG raises to $0.12, Hero calls $0.12, BTN raises to $0.39, 2 folds, UTG calls $0.27, Hero calls $0.27

Flop: ($1.29) T :diamond: 8  6 :spade: (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero checks, BTN bets $0.92, UTG folds, Hero raises to $4.60 all in, BTN calls $3.68

Turn: ($10.49) K :spade: (2 players - 1 is all in)

River: ($10.49) 3 :diamond: (2 players - 1 is all in)

Spoiler

Final Pot: $10.49
BTN shows 8 :club: T :club: (two pair, Tens and Eights)
Hero shows J :spade: J :diamond: (a pair of Jacks)
BTN wins $10.05
(Rake: $0.44)

Assuming this is 5nl

Check shoving in such a spot on the flop for 100+bbs is in any case fundamentally incorrect.

Preflop is debatable - you could do what you did or you could make a 3bet or call/4bet which is pretty unorthodox - but it's not going to be a horrific mistake either way. This check shove though is really bad. There are 2 ranges you have to worry about not just 1 which means the average hand strength that should continue in anyway form should go up. Meaning if the player cbets large his average hand strength should be a lot higher than on average - even if his stat says cbet is 70% or whatever if you think he's a LAG.

Regardless you should create a strategy which doesn't involve shoving all in for 5x your opponent's cbet. That's massively exploitable here especially since like I've just said his average hand strength here should be higher than average.

As a side note which is not so important: There's a common read at these low limits that the fact that he only raised to 8bbs vs two people means he is very unlikely to have as strong a hand as would be average for other players. You will see the same player in the same spot raise to about 0.65 when he actually has a strong hand. It's fundamentally retarded but I see it happen. That should factor into your decision making process both preflop and on the flop - at least a little bit.

yeah it looks a little spewy and his LAG strategy worked vs us (i know the feeling), it's not a value raise because he unlikely to call it off with say a few combos of AT he has

if we think he's super wide here maybe we can consider 4betting his squeeze (even after we cold called) as UTG shouldn't be nutted here and there is already a decent ammount of chips in the pot? We could also trap if he's squeezing alot

his cbet sizing is pretty strong and i'm close to folding the flop, even a hand like KQc or AQc has good equity vs us

since this was a spot that im not used to dealing with, i turn very aggressive and thought i had to protect my hand of this board, but he wasn't a bad agro player there was no way he would call all in with a worse hand, thanks for pointing that out, what do you think about min 4betting this spot to induce a bluff shove by him, since were in a position that looks to them like were not that strong i guess this depends on the level at witch he is thinking.

the side note is a very good point i think it is important, since now you pointed that out i have noticed a similar thing. Thanks again.

I was watching his play, and i did notice he like to 3 bet and squeeze much more then average i picked up JJ with this hand and thought, the best way to exploit him here is to call to induce, i was planning to 4bet him, but when the other guy called i wasn't expecting it so because he was a TAG, so i think i got nervous witch clouded my judgement and made a bad play, witch led to a bad one on the flop too.

About the call raising idea I think it's pretty dubious.

I guess this is NL5 as well and I have moved it to the hand discussion board.

If you have observations that he is pretty wide here, JJ are a good hand to 4B/call shove.
I mean preflop.

Depend on how much loose he was 4bet is probably option.

As played I would x/c F. Raise is overplay and I don´t see any reason to do it. X/f seems to me quite weak vs LAG

On the flop we have to call, we may still have the best hand.

I didn't have any information on his 4b range, so how should I play vs that?

You do not need info on his 4betting range as you are going to 4 bet. You need to know his 5bet range or Fold to 4 bet.

Yes sorry, that's what I meant! :f_biggrin:
What would be the best approach to an unkown range here then?

The best approach is to tighten your calling range in the first place so that this LAG doesn't have fold equity preflop with a tiny squeeze. You shouldn't be calling and then 4betting at all. If you want to prevent your opponent from making money by squeezing then don't call with any two cards that looks good vs one raise in early position. Just call with 77+ to TT or JJ, AQ and maybe KJs QJs and 3bet the rest. Obviously call or fold once squeezed on.

If you start calling so wide as you need to protect yourself by call/4beting then you're going to be exploitable unless you include some AA or KK in your calling range, otherwise you turn your hand face up into JJ and or AK and your opponent will get to invest only 8 big blinds for the opportunity to stack you everytime he has QQ+ and AK and you have AK or JJ. Think about that. And calling AA or KK to trap means your 3betting range cannot possibly hold itself together, along with the fact that you lose value.

Don't make things complicated for yourself. Focus on the price that you're getting and the fact that you have a strong enough range to continue with already. Remember, your opponent's theoretical squeezing range here - vs two players and facing the possibility that he could run into the SB or BB - should be very strong, so the best approach is to just remain solid and call/call with the suggested narrow range.

And don't get me wrong. I'm not saying be a nit, I'm saying you're in early position and many people are putting lots of money into the pot!

Sorry I haven't organized my thoughts better in this post it's all a bit jumbled up together. But these are my opinions about the matter.

And also, on the particular flop think about how your range hits the flop.

If you did just call with my range and call this squeeze with say 88- JJ and those few high suited hands you had - you have a very strong holding here on average. You could have a set of tens or eights fairly often or your one overpair JJ or two overcards with potentially a backdoor flushdraw or a gutshot. I'm just saying this is a random flop and you have a good hand on average.

The point is your opponent is that your opponent - whether he knows it or not - would be putting himself at very high risk of losing money by cbetting so large. And remember that the same range goes for the first player as well more than likely.

I mean you compare everything I've said now with just 4betting and basically praying to god that everyone folds and it's pretty easy to see which one is the best of the two options.

IMO UTG calling is never ever thinking about trapping you to 4bet bluff with AA

The annoying thing is UTG could call/call with queens but i think if we know the squeezer is super wide here I don't mind 4B jamming atall and normally UTG calling makes it more exciting to pickup those extra BB's

If UTG call/calls with AK then that's fine for us and the rest he call folds

Being results orientated it supports the play but even before reading vs an agro super agro squeezer should be ok

UTG will push AK/QQ here.

UTG should 4bet those hands

I we know it then i have no problem jamming JJ vs the wider squeezer
