My goal will be 60k playing Heads-Up No Limit, which will be quite an adventure as I am a small stakes SnG 6max hypers player.
Who am I? My name is Jernej, 33 years old from Slovenia. I am one of those everlasting students popular in Slovenia, close to finishing my master’s degree in economics, but this is staying on pause for now. I love all of the sports especially basketball and martial arts, love to travel and have lots of others hobbies depending on my mood (computer stuff, guitar, party, etc.). From very early on I’ve been dreading the 9 to 5 life, especially to “waste” the best years studying or working more than half of your day for one short vacation a year, so I was doing a lot of soul-searching. You know the Jay-Z song: “9 to 5 is how you survive, I ain’t trying to survive, I’m trying to live it to the limit and love it a lot”. This is where poker came in and helped with flexibility and earning potential.
My long “flirting with poker” story: I was actually introduced to poker by my friends about 10 years ago, but we had quite an on and off kind of relationship. Like every strategy game and competition I wanted to solve it and win it. Started learning strategy and soon I was a playmoney millionaire baller on Pokerstars playing SnGs 😎 . I thought I am the best player ever, deposited 40-50$ and lost $20 in 20 minutes (which was a lot at that time for me). Ended my career, until I got some freeroll tickets when Titan opened up and I actually placed two times ITM to win $250. Back in action baby! Joined online poker school in my town ran from the only official live poker room. I heard we had a very strong FL holdem high stakes players in Ljubljana, like Izmet Fekali (Jonas Znidarsic), so I got interested in the format. I started playing fixed limit online…. until the police stormed the place as in movies, closed it down and the school stopped with it. Another break? Not this time, because I found out a cool trick: bonus whoring!!
I could clear bonuses relatively fast with my break-even 0.5/1 game. Had some fun with it and went on spending most of my bankroll for a Thailand Muay Thai training trip, followed by a break from poker again. When Pokerstars opened micro SnGs I went back to my beloved SnGs with $20 or $30 I had still on Pokerstars and ran it up, stepped it up even more on FullTilt and was climbing towards mid stakes, actually playing half professionally, when “Black Friday” happened and FullTilt went to the ground with all of my money! Abrupt end to my first months of serious play. But Pokerstars to the rescue!! Thank you again for saving me. Started playing again, but my old school “fold AQ to a raise because too many times we are dominated” wasn’t that great of a strategy anymore: P. I wanted to continue seriously and be a pro,so I transferred to 6max turbos and later hypers with a cool coach and I started winning and working hard again. Learned a lot and also got my workload to a new level. So after that on my own again, I was ready for big plans for this year. Started hard, but it ended with a prolonged vacation and 4-5 months of debauchery. Since I didn’t climb up from $5 to $20 tourneys and a few $30- $40ish to just $30+I needed to step my game up to keep my years plan intact. Something with no excuses and hardcore no messing around. I always wanted to learn cash games as well to evolve as a poker player even more.
No more funny business, 60k in one year,a new apartment in 2 years 😉 , let’s get it on!!
I am starting with the challenge next week after 20th though, since I still have some other non-poker related project to take care of before poker can take the 24/7 time, so good luck and see you then ![]()
