New player rant. Frustrated about all the conflicting info out there. Any advice

tough question, man. when i started out, i posted a lot of hand evaluations in the forums here... but the standard just isn't the same now (with the Professional Judges out)
you might still benefit from it, but whatever you do, think for yourself and see what makes sense and what doesn't

Bankroll management is there to save you from variance. Sometimes you will hit a bad run and that is why you should have some kind of BRM (so you can keep on playing even if you have bad luck). In cash games I think something around 30 buy-ins is enough, some use 20 and some prefer to have 40 or even more. If you do not want to deposit again, then I suggest you go with bigger bankroll. Just remember that bankroll management won't save you from bad play.

When I first started I played the lowest SNGs there was. Then I switched to cash games because I enjoy those more. I think you just have to try which format you like the most. Cash and tournaments are quite different and I think at the beginning it would be better to concentrate only to one format. In poker I think you can win with many different strategies and there is not necessarily only one correct strategy. You will eventually find the one that suits you best but first you should learn the basic strategy.

First of all you need to decide what type of the game you want to play. Cash or MTT.

If you're completely new to poker I would suggest cash games. Couple of tables (3-4) just 'cos cash tables are more active then MTTs. Analyze your hands, buy yourself some sort of poker trackers - they are must have if you want to become a better poker player! And of course, start at the very lowest stakes! Nowdays even NL2 have tons of regs that tend to crush mindless players and they are sitting there for a reason

When it comes to books, Harrington on Holden is a must read for beginners, but it is outdated when it comes to advanced play. The game has changed a lot since then. That's not to say it's completely obsolete, I still read them every few months. My suggestion is to buy as many mike caro books as possible. Start with Holden's most profitable advice (pretty sure that's what it's called, I could be wrong though b/c I'm at work). Trust me it's a must have for ANY style of poker.
