Player was 50/25/0 over 18 hands. I always treat stats with caution until sample is greater, so my post game analysis used ranges less than 25% for this villain's UTG raising range.

My main question is, was my pre-flop call correct here?

Poker Stars, $3.16 Buy-in (25/50 blinds, 6 ante) No Limit Hold'em Tournament, 7 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

Hero (SB): 1,546 (30.9 bb)
BB: 1,474 (29.5 bb)
MP1: 1,974 (39.5 bb)
MP2: 2,048 (41 bb)
MP3: 1,182 (23.6 bb)
CO: 2,810 (56.2 bb)
BTN: 2,466 (49.3 bb)

Preflop: Hero is SB with J♣: A♥:
MP1 raises to 150, 4 folds, Hero calls 125, BB folds

nope....you really should 3bet oop especially if a fish opens utg, myself I would try to get him allin preflop based on your stats you have on him, in sng/mtt small sample can be quite correct and enough of info to do what you must

Thanks for your reply. I am finding it quite hard in ICMIZER to construct any opening/calling ranges here that allow a +EV shove with AJo. Its only when I extend his opening range beyond 25% that AJo falls into our shove range.

First, I have moved your thread to the hand discussion forum, because it’s fits better there.
We are playing only 30bb effective and if we are 3betting we are blowing up the pot with a decent ace and stacking off based on only 18 hands on him with AJ is way too loose I think.

Cheers,

Thank you SKD.

I agree that a 3bet with AJo is too loose here. So is the call good? Is a call, then fit or fold, the best way to play this?

I agree, I want to see the flop then I'll take my decision.

Is it not difficult to win enough chips here to offset the 125 investment? We are oop, we need to hit and be up against a worse ace who will give value. That seems like a lot of boxes to tick. Which was making me think... maybe ... a fold. As if I'm not nitty enough! Or do we donk on favourable, but missed, flops?
