I highly doubt that anyone is going to argue with you that violence and torture aren't real problems. The reason other people were not offended isn't because they're okay with real world torture, but because they saw it as just a humorous and, yes, "harmless" animation to express annoyance etc - pretty much like it was intended.
And I strongly disagree with the popular idea that any joke (some can be in bad taste, of course) about a serious problem is somehow delegitimizing it. In fact, humor is often a very effective tool to deal with terrible situations. Just do a web search for Soviet jokes to get some good examples. I'm obviously talking about actual jokes by Soviet citizens, not those outdated "In Soviet Russia..." meme jokes.
None of it really matters, anyway. You found a way to block it, and everyone else gets to keep using it, if they like. I'd call that a win-win.
