Which books will make me a pro?

Hello folks,

I have a little experience in poker and would like to become a pro. Which books/videos/blogs would you recommend for a newcomer who wants to play the big pots of Las Vegas in a few years?

So: which book do you think I should start with and which one would be second, etc.?

Best regards

Weird advice. The high school part of maths program seems the least linked to poker use in my country, as it's not enough to introduce complex topics such as Game Theory but already far beyond what's needed to calculate pot odds and such so I'd have understood better if you had chosen either middle school or university textbook =)

BigBigFish you talk about playing at Las Vegas so I guess live oriented books such as Ed Miller's ones should do the trick for you. It's solid but still quite basic.

To be honest I am not sure what they even teach at High Schools. It was supposed to be semi-fun post.

I thought about longer post about the road to possible poker career and how books are really only minor tool in that. But then I thought that shorter post was better.

10 years later, I still haven't found such a magic book

'The Mental Game of Poker' in 2 volumes by Jared Tendler and Barry Carter is a must-read, as hinted by Blitz76, though it doesn't teach the strategy of poker itself.

'Expert Heads Up No-Limit Holdem' in 2 volumes by Will Tipton is a great book for advanced players but too difficult for a beginner who'd prefer to learn something easy and start crushing the micros. If I were just starting, and even nowadays, I'd rather watch videos than read books. Few authors prefer to release books instead of videos nowadays, so videos tend to be more up-to-date, and there are even some dedicated to the specifics of live poker that differ it from online one.

Why do you hate that book?
I like it because it actually helped me to manage tilt. The second part also gives good tips about studying and improving your game etc..

What do you mean by the hard way? Tilting and losing a lot of money and finally learning to control it? What if the book had helped you, could it be possible that you would have lost less money than what you would have paid for the book?

Ofc we are all individuals and different things work for different people.

Because it outlined a really solid learning strategy, using my emotional states to measure skill level and confidence, basically paved the way for me to becoming a decent winning player.

I think that the question in itself is flawed. There is no single thing that you can buy or own that will make you a good poker player. First thing that you need to realize is that it's like a real job. You need to be very serious/professional about this.

You can buy a lot's of good books, but there is no complete systematic method when you try to learn from all of them. At once. You will just get confused.

Best solution is to have poker coach, who tells you what to do. It's not very cheap, so people try to find alternatives. As for beginners, I suggest to find one full system (created preflop ranges, postflop plan, standard lines, etc.) and only work only on that. Most likely it's going to be one of the poker training sites. Before you chose one, you need to do your homework and find out if they have a "backbone" material. Meaning, they give you a standard game-plan against average opponent. Then you drill it for a long, long, long, long time.

Then you get some healthy bank-roll which you use to get better and also can afford to pay a coach.

With all this being said your question should rather be: What are possible training sites to get me to a basic "poker variant" game plan? I can afford to pay 50$/month.

Nice discussion, but what does BigBigFish himself think of all this stuff?
He is a live player and here we are more online players.
For live play I think the videos of Andrew Neeme are quite interesting.
