PokerStars Zoom, Hold'em No Limit - $0.02/$0.05 - 6 players
Hand delivered by Upswing Poker

UTG: $13.12 (262 bb)
MP: $2.60 (52 bb)
CO: $5.00 (100 bb)
BU: $11.42 (228 bb)
SB: $5.00 (100 bb)
BB (Hero): $6.03 (121 bb)

Pre-Flop: ($0.07) Hero is BB with T J
3 players fold, BTN raises to $0.12, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.07

Flop: ($0.26) T A 5 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.14, Hero calls $0.14

Turn: ($0.54) Q (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN checks

River: ($0.54) 4 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.38, Hero calls $0.38

I think this is a pretty marginal spot but just for study purposes and how to think about hands, I want to ask if this hand is only good as a bluff catcher?

you have all the Ax and even Qx hands. there is no need to call 3rd pair here.

I think its too thin to play this as a bluffcatcher, maybe he bluffs J9 here sometime or turn his 77 into a bluff, but with 3rd pair we are on bottom of our range and we can fold this, and we have better hands. He has s howdown value with 77 and doesent need to bluff that kind of hands. As its likley you call Ax Qx here with this line.

If he starts to valuebet A8 A7 kind of hands this call gets even worse here, because he also need more bluffs.
If i put some ranges in equilab this call is - ev and its not even close

I think the bottom line of this hand is that he doesent have enough bluffs here( by far ) to justify a call with 3rd pair.

But its an interesting hand for sure. And i like your thought process but your applying it in the wrong way. If you play a bluffcatcher hand, villian need to have more bluffs, and this board is not favorable for that.

On the other Hand if Hero is on BTN we can overbetbluff alot on the river against a weaker line on this board because we arent supposed to have much bluffs here. And its working even better against regulars.

I agree.

So, it's actually not even good as a bluff catcher and in a long run, it's a losing call.

It's to bad we don't know anything about the villain in this hand. Read less I would fold the river, but the rest of the hand is well played.
