[Closed] What does raise to 3 BB mean?

In poker generally, a "standard" raise is 3bb. Many players incorrectly see this as raising TO 3bb instead of raising BY 3bb.

Ie : blinds are 10/20 then a raise of 3bb would make the bet 80 NOT 60 which is really just a raise of 2bb.

Some players will also vary the size of their raise depending on their position, raising more when UTG and less when in the cutoff or on the button.

The size of a raise alone is not an indicator of the strength of a hand, many other things need to be taken into consideration. I have seen many players raise by as much as 10bb with weaker hands like low pps because they don't want a caller. Some players will also raise hugely with AA "Because I always lose with it" and want to avoid callers.

Other than using odd tendencies (like you described), what else would you use to determine your action?

The things I can think of are their position, playstyle, and maybe their perception of my playstyle (usually pretty tight).

The size of the raise does not tell us anything about the opponents hand if this parameter is analyzed without other factors

You can make a better decision with this information :

1. Position of the raiser: UTG, MP, LP or blinds. Earliest the position better the hand

2. Type of player: Tight, Loose, Aggressive,

3. Size of the bet

For example

A tight-aggressive player making a 3-4 BBs from UTG means a very strong hand

A loose-aggressive player making a 2-4BBs from the same position indicates a bigger variety of hands

I agree with the previous posts but I think it may also just be a live player who has moved to playing online. I used to always raise to 3bb before joining PS. That was and still is the standard raise in every casino I've ever played in(Canada/U.S. only) Just something to think about.

3xbb standard raise imo, so i gues u got it wrong

i think on nl10 4bb is probably fine cus everyone are so bad but on nl50+ 3bb is the standard openraise
