Finland has only 5,5 million people and we have tons of great players here. I think it was Phil Gordon who said the same thing.

I think Americans are the worst players. It may be true that many of the top pros are from the U.S. but 90% of the fish are too. I've played on Full Tilt and Pokerstars and most of the players are American so if they only make up 60% of the winners that shows that they are worse than the rest of the world.
There are not that many usa fish though because of UIGEA, not everyone wants to make a deposit because they might think playing is now agaisnt law.
They are over achievers, but in a good way, after all they are just trying to be like CANADIANS.Yes its true they have been doing this for decades now, don't worry we don't mind, were used to it.( ♠_wink:passive aggressive!)
There are many examples of what I am talking about.lets start with the oldest sporting award in North America, the Grey Cup(football). The yanks didn't even come up with the super bowl until over 50 years later. They have adopted basketball like it was their national sport or something. It was Invented in CANADA of course,In fact the best player in the world is this little white guy from Vancouver Island.Hockey,ha,I could just say Tim Hortons, but you wouldn't know what the hell I am talking about,so I'll just say two words,Gretzski, and Crosby.
304,059,724 million Southerners
33,311,389 CANADIANS, but yet we came up with the best poker player in the world ♠_tongue:,Mr.Negreanu.Only 9% of the population and we are kicking ass again, clearly if we had the other 91%, the statement by lichoman1 would be...
Why CANADIAN poker players are the best in the world eh!, (you do the math). ♠_biggrin:

Patriotism is your belief that your country is the best because you were born there.

With that many people in the US no wonder they have a few winning players...
Ummm maybe because USA is pritty much the biggest country in the world? So natrually they have a bigger population meaning more people who are really good at what they do, in this case poker.
Not sure if i should laugh or cry.....Back to school for you John.....enough said!

He is of Romanian heritage but he was born in Toronto so that makes him pretty Canadian if you ask me.

for you information,
Daniel Negreanu (born July 26, 1974) was born in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. His parents, Annie and Constantin, left the old Communist regime of Romania in 1967.
He has nothing to do with romania, only his parents. I doubt if he speaks a word of that language.
off: asa ca nu te bucura:)

I think it's you who should take a re-run in geography and population studies ♦
Why are Chinese mahjong players the best in the world? Because they actually play the game LDO. This question has nothing to with population size rather than the population that actually play the game. The number of poker players in Scandanavia probably far outweighs the poker playing population in China. I think it might even be a fair bet that a large proportion of chinese players are actually part of the chinese community here on pokerstrategy ![]()
Thus it is also fair to say that the US has the biggest poker playing population.
I bet in 5years chineese will overpopulate any other nations as they rule everything due to their "population size"
as far as the game is learnable they can do it, they can copy it etc etc..

I think that couldnt be the reason
Note i said "pritty much"
There are many good players in russia i would agree. LAck of good players in China and India i would put down to there not been many people with disposable income to afford to play poker.
Ok John. Firstly you need to go and Google countries & population sizes so you actually have some idea of WTF you are talking about. Secondly perhaps you could preface your statements with "this is my hopelessly misinformed opinion which lacks all credibility due to my ignorance & inability to grasp concepts & critically think them through"!

So I'm not gonna waste my time on google or anything but I'm pretty sure in terms of population the U.S. is the 3rd biggest country in the world, though well behind China and India. In terms of "size" meaning land mass it is surely top 5, maybe top 3. I know for a fact top 2 are Russia and Canada in that order, although Canada is a huge country our "massive" population of ~30 million doesn't make us a big country if you ask me.
So in John's defence let's look at this a simple way...the U.S. is in the top 5 of both size and population and has a standard of living miles above most countries, disposable income being a significant factor. Given this information it would be safe to assume that they would produce a fair amount of good poker players.
Again he did say "pritty much" so although he isn't going to win any English awards, the meaning behind the statement is pretty clear.
