MP1: 1,500

Pre-Flop: (30) J♦ A♣ dealt to Hero (BTN)

River is ugly.. does it still make sense to value bet or better check river? ..

Hmm well alot of players will argue the raise u made is good but it's not my line personally. I limp behind with so many limpers already in, keep the pot small and see what happens. Obviously I would OPEN raise. As played I bet smaller on flop and turn and with that river completing all draws it's a check fold from me. If I'd raised pre like u I'd go 150 flop, then either check turn or bet small something like 250. So many fish out there with an easy A7/A8 2 pair scenario and then with the pot small I could maybe bet-fold the river. Players will often try to teach you to bet big on draw heavy flops and turns to make villain pay big but in my opinion it's not always the best play.

Well I play AJs 9handed in MP1 and AJo in MP2 and mostly raise it as I hate limping and see a lot with Axx hands.. dunno if this is too loose as I find it still quite tight..

and yeah I raise those also even with limpers because I hate limping and see a flop with Axx and then feeling uncomfortable going broke in a limped pot.. but yeah that's my personal line..

Either is ok I'm just stating my preference. You need to add to your limp range so people don't always put you on set mining. Mix things up, don't play so robotically. That doesn't mean slow AA-QQ either.

I guess limping or raising preflop are both logical options. Imo since it is still very early and since AJo is obviously a difficult hand to play postflop, whatever you choose to do preflop leads to the same play postflop. If you hit nothing, check-fold or at most try a c-bet against a single opponent - probably 1/2 of the pot and if you don't take it there, drop the hand. If you hit something, again because this something obviously is not something very good to lose all your chips with, just try to get it to a cheap showdown. So at the hand we examine, after the MP2 calls your c-bet, you must try to put the less chips you can in order to reach the showdown. Meaning that you must check behind on turn and river or if he bets on river just call. Now if he decides to bet hard on river, just leave it. There is plenty of time and you will have better opportunities to collect some chips...

P.S. Also your raise preflop maybe could have been a little less, say 80, to avoid growing the pot too big so early with a dangerous hand.

I would definitely raise AJo after two unknown limpers.

If they have pocket pairs and are set-mining, then they will check-fold most flops, and it's great to have made the pot larger and to have isolated players who will give up so often. However, most limps are by players who have a mediocre hand which looks a little pretty, like A5o or Q7s, who hope to get lucky on the flop. Your hand has a large equity advantage and you have position, so raising is profitable whether they will give up preflop or not.

I would push on the turn. It is a slight overbet, but not too much of one.

As played, the river promotes a few hands to be better than yours, and it also makes many hands less likely to pay you off. I think many players would be scared of the flush or straight and would check-call with two pair, and I think players might be able to fold worse than top pair even at these odds, so I am inclined to check behind.

According to the ICM, you need more than 50% equity when called to bet for value since the chips you risk are worth more than the chips you might gain. Here is some ICM Explorer output on the decision of whether to bet for value:

Effective bet size: 518
Win small: 2352 chips, 0.1667
Lose small: 608 chips, 0.0485
Win big: 2870 chips, 0.1976
Lose big: 90 chips, 0.0075

Equity needed to bet for value: 57.11%
Chip gain needed to bet for value: 73.7.

Well, I don't think it's necessary to really mix up my play at $5,50's as the competition ain't much better than the $3,40's or so.. maybe at higher limits it's necessary.. but until then I'll play like the robots :P .. anyway I appreciate ur advice..

That is true. Play is so awful down there that you can indeed play very tight. I find however that at ANY level the more marginal spots u take a little look at for cheap, the higher your roi, as long as you're ok post flop.

I am folding this hand early as there are many nicer spots later.

This is pretty weak man. Raising AJo preflop here is fine.
On the turn shoving is probably best, the only other line I would really consider is checking behind for pot control.. but if we do that we're pretty much gambling that the river blanks which I don't really like that much.

I still think raising to 3 limpers with AJo first level is marginal at best. We will get so many callers and AJo in multiway raised pot early is very dangerous.

Raising AJo on the btn after limpers is completely standard and if you are not doing it you are losing tons of value

Way too tight imo.. u still have position remember ;)..

ok, position is key.

so my 2 sentences above are for situations when Hero is on CO or HJ, there are one/two or more limpers so still 3 or 4 players left to act. In this situation I am inclined to fold.

Hi all,

I'd actually bet closer to 350 on the turn and definitely check back this river as played
