Yes I started at NL10 with $250 on Jan 1st, as directed by TT.
I have to agree with Ged that your study group will probably degenerate into a big whingefest before long, but we all need a whinge sometimes, so maybe it would be better to vent on Skype than in my blog, so I'll join.
I think a sensible understanding of simple probability helps you to deal with bad beats and variance. For example, you get the money in on the flop with top set and get called by bottom set. He's drawing to one out and hits it on the river. Aaaargh! So what was the probability of that happening? About 1 in 25. If you roll two dice, the probability of rolling a double six is 1 in 36 - significantly less likely. When you're playing Monopoly (yes, I have to play Monopoly, even though I'd rather stick pins in my eyes), do you throw the board across the room when someone rolls a double six? Well, if your one of my kids, you probably do, but I don't. I think the analogy puts things in perspective. Bad beats are your friend. The other 24 times, you win.

In my house we play Monopoly with real money. So, yes, when Mrs Tim64 bankrupts MrTim64 by getting me to throw a double six, I throw the board across the room.

Three doubles in a row and you go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect £200. That's a 1 in 216 chance, and well worth tilting over imo.
This thread reminds me that my parents bought us Monopoly Revolution for Xmas, which I forgot about because I hated it so much. You don't have money any more (I love fiddling with the money), just a credit card. You plug them into a machine and the money gets transferred. The result is that you never have any idea how much money you have or don't have (just like a real credit card really!). Complete bollocks, and the kids love it. Maybe Tim could use real credit cards in his house.
Chess again last night. All the books on the Alekhine say that after 1. e4 Nf6 2 Nc3 the best reply is probably e5, so I've played that two games in a row, ended up with the Two Knights Defence, and had no idea what I'm doing either time! I think I'll try d5 instead next time, as there's a good chance my opponent won't know what he's doing then either. Anyway, last week I drew, but last night I managed to stumble into this horrible position.
Nxe5 is a real killer here, as the white bishop has a nasty tendency to end up on f5 and pick up my queen. I was not happy, but my opponent didn't look happy either, and played PxP. He told me afterwards he hadn't even considered Nxe5 (what a pair of patzers!). Anyway, I play d5, the black clouds lift from my position, and I'm happy.
Later, after a couple of inaccurate moves from him,
and he's pretty much busted. He resigned five moves later after I'd gobbled up all his king side pawns without losing the initiative. ♠_cool:
Initiative = key to success in chess and poker, imo.
I think you could still survive after 1.Ne5 Nxe5 2.Bxe4 Qa4.
Now if 3.Bf5+ Nd7, if 3.dxe5 Qxe4, if Bxb7 Kxb7 4.dxe5 Qxa2 (4...dxe5 5.Qf3 Rb8 6.Qf7 and you are left with a pawn down and a King in drafts) with a complex position (probably still better for white) to be played but considering that you ended up 5 moves later to win the original one I think you had some decent chances left
