[Closed] Grinding in the Far East - Going for Supernova

Hello again!

Is it just me, or have the tables changed a lot since the buyin changes? I am seeing a ton of 40bb stacks now, where before there was only a few, mostly SNE grinders and the odd fish. Most of them seemed pretty bad but if there are going to be a lot of these guys I am going to have to figure out how to adjust vs them. I don't really know how they are playing so in my recent sessions I was unsure what range to ship for 40bb when I got 3-bet BTN vs blinds/SB vs BB. I never played during the days of short stackers so I am not used to playing against people with a lot less than 100bb.

Status Update:

So I played a bit without looking at HEM or the cashier, and I am liking it so far. In my last session I ran pretty bad(slight understatement) and probably ended down quite a bit. However, I think I played my best and managed to not feel like shit all day like usual, so that is a big success for me.

Hey, the new buyin changes are a wonder ♦ The thing is, all the professional short stackers seem to have moved over to CAP games, but the fish who just like to play min-buyin don't know what CAP games are so just go to the safe looking normal games and play for min buyin there ♦ Seriously, the amount of fish about is huge haha.

Yes I agree, the amount of fish definitely seem to have increased. Unfortunately they have been getting the better of me lately.

Status Update:

Well things are not going so well! I had to cheat and look at my cashier because I have been running so terribly that I was not certain if I was even properly rolled for NL100 anymore. I really liked not looking at my results and I definitely felt a huge positive effect though. I probably would have killed myself if I had been looking at HEM every day. I am not really sure what I should do now because I have been playing my best but I just cant win. </whine>

Tell me something.. even if I dont look at the cashier, aproximately I know how much I'm up or down, how you dont know it? you dont watch showdowns ?:) sick graphs btw...gl with ur mindset

While you generally have an idea wheather you are up or down, the point of not looking at your results is that since you never know exactly how much you won/lost, it's much easier to focus on if you made the correct play or not. For example, normally if I end a session down 2BI I just look at the money I lost and feel like crap, whereas when I'm not looking at the results I can say "I am probably down today, but I played my best and didnt make any big mistakes." I would definitely recommend trying this to anyone who has problems looking at the cashier or HEM during or after sessions, as I think it really made a difference for me.

Also I did play a few sessions where I had absolutely no idea how much I was up/down, which felt quite refreshing.

In other news I played a session this afternoon and turned a profit for the first time in a few days. Overcoming the trials of the poker gods(which came in the form of 2BI lost to nut flush vs straight flush and kings vs aces while playing headsup), I ended the session up $0.80! Fistpump!

I get the not looking at the cashier idea but I just know almost exactly my ups and downs, thats why i get mad when im down anyway:)) tho sometimes when i play from evening to late morning and I'm really in a state of trance and focusing like fuck I never know how much im up or down, like 3-4days ago I played like this, ultrafocused, didnt even see my room just the monitor was in macro, and I got about 13BI..that was a nice surprise ♦ I just cant imagine one day, playing ultrafocused and getting the message "your funds are not enough to rebuy" ohh that would be..ouch

ye definitely, i use tinypic too and never had a problem..also I dont get most ppl why they have such a low resolution HEM graph, not Hajler but many others and its all at imageshack, the site resizes it or they just save it somehow that small ?

@OZSA: I'm pretty sure Imageshack auto-resizes pictures by default unless you unselect the option, so that's probably why everyone posts low-res graphs and stuff.

From now on I will use tinypic, thanks for the suggestion guys. ♦

Status Update:

I am still not running very well, but I think I have overcome the initial depression that resulted from my first big downswing that wasn't just a result of my own poor play, and have returned to my usual grinding self. I think my hand reading ability has improved quite a bit(I'm still not thinking in ranges enough, but I am getting a better sense of villains lines and have been able to make some good plays as a result), which I am very happy about.

However, I have some very bad news. Due to an illness in my wifes family, I am going to have to withdraw my poker roll to help out. I am going to grind out another 3000FPP so I can take 2 of the $650 bonuses and then cash out. What this means for me I don't know. I could never quit poker after putting in so much effort, and it has already become a very large part of my life. This is very much not a move I want to make as I have finally built myself up to the point where I can start making real cash, not to mention I am already 1/4 done my supernova challenge! However some things need to be done so I guess I just need to focus on my next move.

I am already in the process of applying for a staking deal, so hopefully everything works out.

I just played a bunch of MTTs this morning because the 100k freeroll was on, and it was a pretty frustrating experience. I min-cashed in 3 super long normal speed tourneys with a big guarantee after playing like 4 hours. The only thing I won was this random $1.10 rush on demand tourney that I joined because it looked pretty. I got to the final table the shorty with 5bb but I doubled the first hand and mostly just folded to heads up vs the chip leader who was a huge fish and sucked out on pretty much the whole table. I managed to win even though he had 6x my chips.

Also I made 2BI playing a total of 23 hands of cash on a table I just opened because I saw *two* of my favorite whales were playing together. So I guess it wasn't a bad session after all, but damn MTTs are taxing on the nerves.

Well I cashed out about 5k so I'm back to being a busto for the moment! I still have my ghetto FT roll though, so maybe I will try to bink a donkament while I wait and see if I can get staked.

Status Update:

I am going to have to put my Supernova challenge on hold for now, but I am about 1/4 done so even if I am out of the game for a few months I should still be able to make it. 2x SN is probably not going to happen though.

Also, since February has come to and end, its time for my monthly update. Hooray! This month was pretty rough for me, and was also my first losing month ever.

Hi again!

Well the life of a busto isn't as bad as I first though it would be! I did some studying this morning, mostly MTT stuff as I have been looking to learn the format for a while. I railed my super gambler friend in some $20 tourney and he luckboxed it for a nice pay day, which got me motivated to start playing MTTs.

Today I didn't have time to join any big tourneys, so I just played some SNGs and O8 cash, and I ran pretty well.

Here's my SNG graph on the $2 and $6 turbos for today. Not bad if you consider the fact that I have no idea what I'm doing.

Thanks to a couple of good days I have tripled my roll, so I can probably play micro donkaments now without too much worry.

Hello again all, long time no see.

I am officially back in business! I have entered into a staking/coaching deal with Gerv which I am very exited about.

We had our first coaching session last night and it was great. I actually felt embarrassed at times at just how little I know and how bad I am at this game. But that's probably a good thing, because it means that theres nowhere to go but up from here! After some stuff in HEM we did a sweat session, and even playing just 4 tables I found it really hard to digest all of the information I was getting, and Gerv made me realize how much stuff I am missing when I play normally.
 
In todays session I tried to apply some of the things I learned in the coaching, and I ended up having the best time I have had in poker in a long time. I often feel bored even when I play a bunch of tables, but today I was able to dedicate my full attention to trying to pick up on things/taking notes and I really enjoyed myself. It felt great abusing all of the mass tabling regs and just being a big jerk in general. Some of the guys seemed to adapt but it was pretty shocking how a lot of people would just fold even though I was 3-betting them every time.

I lost a flip and that was the only big pot I played so I figured I was probably down when I quit, but when I looked HEM showed me I was up $80! So this is what positive non showdown winnings feels like! This was in stark contrast to my usual results - in one of my sessions yesterday I ended down 20bb even though I stacked two people and my biggest loss was only 40bb.

Anyways I am super pumped up to start crushing people! From now on I am also going to be spending more time studying, and doing it right!
