I am up tree-fiddy @ NL5 and I didnt play more than 40 hours, not that hard, sir

$100 to casino and return $50? thats really decent ROI. imo, you'll never make it out of the woods playing NL2, NEVER.
live game is really the way to go to make big bankrolls.
once you make more $ e.g. $100 playing 1/1 , when u have $200 you can start playing 1/2 and make even more $ than before so on and so forth.
once u have alot of cash, then u can decide whether u want to crush the online games for what its worth. the plus side is you dont have to leave ur house to play, although the returns are really really small, $100 for nl2, and $10000 for nl200.. but meh, it's just like a game online, click buttons like how u play your WOW or L4D and u can make some small cash.
to sum it up,stick to live for the big $, and online if u feel like making some $ playing games.

In a few hours you can easily make 1k$ at nl2,no need to play 26 hours live to make 50$.

Are you sure the concept of ROI is applicable here? I've heard that ROI applies only to tournaments, not cash play. I play cash limit.

I haven't played live NL yet simply because I'm leery of the variance. At 2/5 limit the most I can lose in one hand is $56, and that's only if every round of betting is capped. At NL, in order to avoid being a shortstack a**hole, I have to buy in for at least 100 bb, which is $200 at the 1/2 game available around here, and stand to lose the whole $200 in one hand--or more, if I already doubled up through an all in and lose to a bigger stack on the second all in.

The big issue with live play is expenses--transportation and food, mostly. I've yet to figure out how to manage expenses properly so my net profit is actually a net loss.

dont just hear, SEE. u bring $100 to casino, you leave casino with $150. investment in casino session? $100, profits? $50, returns on investment AKA ROI therefore is 50%. this is applicable to everything else, not only poker tourneys/SNG. u can use it in shares/properties etc.

yes there are expenses, u cant count food since u have to eat anyway. u also need to quantify the fun factor which cannot be equatable in terms of $ and cents. some people like me prefer to do it gamer style because we are so used to playing games. now it's just playing a game that pays. sitting there grinding out the $ is easy gamee. sure we take forever to make $50, but heck, beats playing WOW and paying for monthly supscription yeahhh. i get to really PK someone by busting their stacks not just killing some virtual character that can revive anyway.

Thanks for the clarification on the broader meaning of "ROI."

I can understand your perspective and am not saying there is anything wrong with it. But I'm 45 years old and grew up when "games" consisted of PacMan at the arcade, so my preferences are going to be different from yours.

Nobody has answered my question yet, which is whether this is just a phase I'm going through or the kind of thing that causes a permanent change in a person. If anyone has any ideas on that I'd like to hear them.

I think it's just a fase, my father was exactly the same at 45. They don't call it the rough years for nothing.

why not try live play and online play?

Well it is a big improvement, BB is 2.5X as big, therefore you can make 100 times the profit (with a little bit of creative maths), but it is def more than NL2.

I'm guessing you enjoy poker, so why don't you take the internet side of poker as a kinda fun side game to live poker, and not worry about the money side of it for a while?

Well, thing is, I plan to play live only Friday, Saturday and Sunday when all the fish are there as opposed to the regulars, so I need something to do Monday to Thursday. I guess I can futz around a little with online poker during that time.

Thinking of it as a hobby that costs money rather than a potential profit opportunity definitely does help my mindset, so thank you.

I haven't written a final exam in 21 years. Do you still have to write the darn things in a little paper booklet with a ballpoint pen? My guess is that, by now, they provide you with non-internet-capable computer terminals.
