i know some very good american online players that have confessed to0 me they use crystal meth for long grinding periods....it supposedly keeps them totally for days or weeks on end

Crystal meth could keep up you awake to up to a month if needed...
It could certainly serve it's purposes weren't it for the horrendous side effects it has ... as with most, if not all drugs, I suppose.
If you can't grind through with caffeine at most, stop grinding and call it a day ...

Is base not effective? It speeds you up and you can play for hours.

I gave up all drugs and smoking including nicotine about 5 years ago but I still drink sometimes.
I can't say about poker, but I used to do a lot of my work (coding) and other related brain activities while on various things and base definitely helped at the time as opposed to just doing other drugs without doing base. - You have to get the dosage right, and it is always better if you have slept recently.
However, since giving up all drugs there has been an overall improvement in my concentration and I have to spend less time debugging. I think I am a bit less creative though, my code is more 'Boring' than it used to be ♦.
I only started playing hold'em about a year ago, but I think that I definitely lose more if I play even after a little alcohol.

try snorting instead of smoking, that way you only get affected by the THC (the high/the concentration/the fun part, and not by the cabinol(the lazy/the lameness/the down). Zulu's snorted THC before a battle, and they went friggin crazy, and where concentrated in a sick, sick way.

Insufflating weed sounds painful tbh, my friend tried it once and it didn't seem to do much for him. He got paid £10 though as a dare.
I think this is pretty much like saying would you go into an exam drunk/high. You wouldn't of course. Poker requires concentration and brain power, both of which diminish with most if not all drugs.
Last year, my best result was for the one exam that I did while somewhat intoxicated (6 beers ad fundum or something).
Some alcohol has a good effect on me mostly, stress relief. Less than 6 thuogh.
Crystal Meth is dirty and horrible for you, I have seen many people destroy their lives with it.
Booze is also bad when playing it restricts your thought process. learnt from experience. St. Paddys day 4am down swing. 
Stick to the greens it will keep you from tilting.

There are a lot of drugs in this world with a broad variety of effects on your brain, but really imho you shouldn't take the chemic stuff. I've tried loads of it, including coke, some pills, pep, speed etc...
I now just stick to sometimes alc and even fewer times ganj, I had a real weird time after last years harvest, but I ain't wanna bore you with my sad story. Only thing I really wanna say, if you have taken a good amount of any drug, don't think about poker.
It sometimes is very helpful to drink a glass of vodka, whiskey or any more or less pur liqueur to calm your nerves, but when your brain starts wandering around, close the poker software.
When it comes to live play with my friends, really, I don't care, playing a little sng with them is for the fun, not for the cash, though it certainly would be way less interesting if there's no cash involved.
Oh, and if you really wanna take drugs while playing poker: Use coke, but try to get good one, it really increases your awareness of the situation and has less side-effects than cmeth or xtc or whatever, it's just very addicting as it is one of the finer products human kind has "invented"...

on-topic: there's nothing like poker-friendly drug - even 1 stupid beer has some impact on your brain...I'd never play poker after coming home from bar no matter how I feel - it's like going to work drunk... you wouldn't do that, because you can loose your job and money - what's different in poker? Same money...

Well, if you're a calm person, caffeine is ok, and will actually help stay alert if you need it (although a good night's sleep is more efficient until we find a way to replace it by meds :P)
