Weekend Over

[X] Got shit done.

-I have removed all foreign objects and semi-conscious blobs from the car, it just needs a damn good vacuum after which I'll edit in the pics. Going to try and keep it clean indefinitely instead of leaving a constant pileup until I basically want to puke every time I use it.

-Managed to fill 1.5 large rubbish sacks full of clothes I either don't wear anymore or don't fit me. I put up a listing on www.donatenz.com which is kinda like an "ebay" for charitable giving of goods/services/discounts. I listed the clothes last night and I've already got a non-profit group willing to come and take them off my hands =)

I was originally going to dump them in one of the "clothing bins" scattered around the city but I read that they simply go to a company that onsells for a big profit rather than going to people who need it. It's actually less effort for me to create a listing rather than drive out to a bin (10 minutes drive) as well!

-90% of Closet is dangerously tidy, one more weekend and that should be me sorted for an organised and aesthetically pleasing clothing repository. Pics will be ofc provided, wow this blog is so fucken EXTREME you get pictures of a tidied closet. Dayum.

Last Week's Goals

Every week I want to refine my schedule throwing out what doesn't work and keep what does while mixing in new things to see how it goes.

So I managed quite a productive week indeed last week except when the afternoon rolls around my mind just wanders until I'm writing up this blog post instead of playing poker. I can partially attribute this to my poor sleeping but mostly I think it is a matter of building up the mental muscle required to truck it out till 5:30-6.

Before I injured my toe, 3 days a week I would go for a kickboxing fitness session at midday-1 and I would leave that feeling amazing, totally lucid and motivated to go hard. Since then I have had noticeably lower energy levels and afternoon motivation.

I think until I reinstate KB regularly I need to do something regularly to prop myself up in the afternoon. Instead of running in the evenings I will move this to before my lunch-break.

I'm very happy with my "Morning Ritual" of Walk->Breakfast->BugsPLOfromscratch before I start my session preparation, it gives me time to wake up and think about stuff before I play.

I have also worked out a "Preparation Ritual" before each session begins. I go through my study cards for 10 minutes then listen to "Till I Collapse" which I first heard in this sweet muay thai compilation of Ramon Dekkers

(don't know how to embed lol).

Yeah it might sound lame but it gets me fired up.

Goals for Week of October 17th

-Keep up my Morning & Pre-Session Rituals without fail
[X] [X] [X] [X] [X]

-Review every trouble spot after every session, including study carding the hands!
[X] [X] [X] [X] [X]

-Coaching session
[ ]

-Keep from ANY miscellaneous surfing whatsoever before 5:30pm not during designated break times. (maybe it's better to have a continuum for this instead of a binary fail or pass but I want to see what sheer force of will can do)
[F] [X] [X] [X] [F]

-Get out of bed within 1 minute of waking up in the morning
[F] [X] [X] [X] [F]

-Go to bed at 10:30 or earlier each night,
[X] [F*] [X] [F*] [ ]

-Midday run

Gratz on BM!

I like how you are working on getting a more active/efficient life with your goals. I've been thinking of doing similar challenges in the past, but never actually had enough motivation to go trough with it. I hope you do well!

Pix of formerly messy things

Note: Top shelf still has miscellaneous crap in spades. Before the closet was basically filled up to the 30% mark of random clothes and bags of clutter. Also clothes were just jammed into the hanging wardrobe in any which way. They are now all folded and stored categorically.

I forgot to take any before pics but it's probably best that you don't see the previous state of my car (which all my rl friends can attest to), you might have never recovered from the trauma.

Week of 17th

What worked and what didn't?

-Keep up my Morning & Pre-Session Rituals without fail
[X] [X] [X] [X] [X]

I had a realistic expectation and I lived up to it even though I didn't feel like going for a walk or warming up before a session a couple of times I willed myself to in the end and it shows.

Only one or two times this week stand out to me where emotions suspended my thought process and led me to make decisions way below what I'd consider my best. I'm going to keep this going.

-Review every trouble spot after every session, including study carding the hands!
[X] [X] [X] [X] [X]

This is proving to be a great way to learn. I find myself in spots I consider "standard" a lot more often than before, the grey area in my game is decreasing and I plan on continuing to use this to internalise spots that I previously had no way of solving.

-Coaching session
[ ]

Procrastination fail. I left it till the second to last day to contact my coach and couldn't get in touch with him in time. Next time I will discuss the potential session time on the monday so that there's no chance of this happening again. If I fall behind on coaching sessions I'm missing a good opportunity to see if my gameplay is improving and find those internalised mistakes.

-Keep from ANY miscellaneous surfing whatsoever before 5:30pm not during designated break times. (maybe it's better to have a continuum for this instead of a binary fail or pass but I want to see what sheer force of will can do)
[F] [X] [X] [X] [F]

I don't think I structured this goal well at all. It seems kinda stupid to treat a day where I spent 5 minutes surfing while playing poker the same as one where I spend 3 hours doing so. Overall I'm happy with my focus this week except for friday, which was just lacklustre, I got so little work done and was generally unmotivated. Tuesday-thursday were brilliant though kicked off by early starts where I didn't sleep in at all.

I have a better way to quantify my focus for next week. It's a program called "Rescuetime" and basically monitors how much time you spend each day on "productive" and "unproductive" activities (you assign a productivity level to each activity). I trialled it a bit this week so I'll have data to compare to and a "score" to try and beat next week!

-Get out of bed within 1 minute of waking up in the morning
[F] [X] [X] [X] [F]

Okay so monday night after I wrote this blog, I felt exhausted and sleep deprived. I set my alarm for 7:30 or something allowing for 8.5 hours sleep to try and catch up, but ended up waking up at 5:50 (which is not THAT bad and a lot better than waking up at 3-4) which puzzled the hell out of me. Anyway I got up straight away and even in my increasingly deprived state I managed a productive work day.

So the next night, I get home from rehearsal at like...11pm, end up going to sleep at 11:20 and wake up at 6:30 this time, again I'm still wtf'ing why my body doesn't just accept the chance for extra sleep I'm giving it. I guess I have to attribute this to being stressed out and will have to wait till the show is over to get my shit together for reals.

There's something about getting up straight away and going for a walk that sets the ball rolling for the rest of the day. This is a goal based solely on your motivation and whether you can make it a habit. I definitely want to, and am going to attempt a perfect record next week.

-Go to bed at 10:30 or earlier each night,
[X] [F] [X] [F] [ ]

Awesome foresight by me setting an impossible goal (I didn't anticipate rehearsal would have me home by 10:30+ on tuesday and thursday), imo getting up as soon as you wake up is a way better goal for encouraging time management and good mindset, will scrap this.

-Midday run
[NA] [X] [X] [X] [X]

Great alternative till I return to kickboxing, any day where I am sitting still for 10 hours with movement just to make food etc. I feel like balls by the end of the day.

Shit that needs to get done this weekend

-In order to reach my goal of perfectly de-cluttered closet by the end of the month I'll need to do some work this week and next week, I'm nearly there and the progress is great thus far.

-Still haven't come up with a good way to attack the problem of some BRM for PLO. On the one hand, I don't want to move up until I *know* that I am a winning player, but the volume I'm putting in at the moment, technically I could be a decent winner and breakeven for a long time at the game thus wasting time and money EV.

It feels like I'm outplaying the vast majority of the players I'm surrounded by, but I find it hard to estimate what my edge is and the rake is so high. This weekend I'll come up with something that can be ammended at a later date but I need something to work towards in the short term. I think I'm ready for 50.

-Don't play or study any 6-max this weekend! I have trouble defining my break periods and my weekend/workweek have a tendency to run into each other forming a never-ending "doesn't feel like a holiday, doesn't feel like I'm working hard enough" cycle.

At most I might play some HU PLO which I consider pure fun (and I'm a 17ptBB/100 winner over 2k hands at PLO50 YEEAAH), but try and spend most of my time catching up on shows and gaming.

TLDR; somewhat mundane life stuff, oh yeah Joseph opens in 5 days D:

I'm also restructuring my life and trying to get rid of bad habits at the moment. I know how hard it is and sometimes it gets so frustrating! :( When you know why you want to change it and what will it bring you in the future it doesn't get much easier, but definitely makes you do things "right".

It's really inspiring to see you think even of details and you're actually taking it seriously. I'm sure this will bring you many positive things in your life. But don't let your guard down, we're all enthusiastic in the beginning but if our bad habits return after 2 months we haven't really done anything. I started something similar 2 weeks ago and I already see the changes, I feel better, I think differently, I respect my time and most important - I'm proud of myself for finally taking a stand against my biggest enemy - myself.

Now I'm subscribed to your blog so I even have an extra challenge - "If some lazy black member can do it, why couldn't I". :f_p:

Keep it up :f_thumbsup:

That's great to hear that I can help someone get inspired...

You're right about being our own worst enemy. The biggest thing is making sure we don't revert to old habits, which is hard.

Also I'm having my first session with a new PLO coach this week. Looking for a fresh perspective on my game to see where I'm at.

So why haven't I written in any goals this week or anything regarding the weekend?

-Insane amount of rehearsals
-Internet went out for about 36 hours

I like to write the blog during non-work hours and I've had zero non-work hours free since sunday.

Work day yesterday went ->get up and play poker till 4:30 -> go to final dress rehearsal -> finish at 11:30, sleep at 12 -> get up today for coaching.

The only reason I'm writing this now is that the internet has been so patchy that I want to wait till tomorrow to see if the fault has been fixed.

Basically don't expect many tldr; posts until closing night NEXT saturday as my schedule is going to be play poker->show->sleep until then. I will write up some small goals for the remainder of this week and since we have 2 break days on mon-tue next week I will have time to do a decent post then and after that will be back into maximum focus mode!

It's surprising how easy it is to not go for runs, not do pre-session warm up etc. when you don't have it written down that you have to do it this week, it seems like that is super important for me to keep up the motivation...

-Closet is looking good, I am on schedule for an end of October finish, then the plan is to keep it + my room + car in an efficient and tidy state indefinitely

-BRM for PLO. I have hashed together a simple 30+8 BRM for PLO in a spreadsheet with separate BRs for HU and 6-max. I haven't talked about HU much in this blog but it's a variant I've put a few thousand hands in that I definitely want to work on as a lot of the skills carry over regarding estimating equity and handreading that are helpful in both variants. This is a temporary measure before I consult with my new coach.

-Played some HU PLO, was fun and I'm nearly half-way through grinding out the 8 stacks needed to start shotting PLO100

This week's Goals

Seeing as there are only two more days in the week it's not going to be comprehensive. Also I'm doing away with any "get up straight away" and going to be running a zero alarms except for coaching days so that I can get the extra rest I need for the show. After that's over though straight back into it.

-Make video for first session w/new PLO coach (which is on friday)
[X]

-Barring further internet issues, put in solid workdays on thursday and friday
[X] [X]

-Skipping intervals into run session

Unfortunately I got it in pre with AA2Kds against AJTT or something and lost (Hi-lo PLO).

Not as bad as busting in that FL tournament JJ against that 2-outer, oh well :P

@Waiboy

Yeah I foolishly entered into a PLO8 tourney after I busted out of the FL events.

Shouldn't have tried to force the magic that had been going for so long in that coaching, but instead finish on a peak.

What's up?

Okay so October is over, I wonder if it's prudent to post garphs....

I might put them in for those who like that sort of thing in a later post, it's late and I've got a coaching tomorrow morning ;) (10am start now WOOOO!)

Just quickly though, a quick rundown of what this month has been achieved.

[X] Set up a framework of goal setting

The basic structure of writing a post on sunday detailing how I will approach the next week based on what I find out during that time and evaluating on friday seems to work well. The only problem is that if I don't find time to write out the goals, I don't feel obligated to fulfill them so doesn't work too well when I'm snowed in with stuff to do (which doesn't happen often...).

It fell down somewhat in the last week or so given that 95% of my free time has been devoted to the show, and for the week of Nov7th (when it's all over), shit is gonna get real. The thing is, even though I didn't do as well in every area last week or the week before, it's still a lot better than my old style of very little study and lots of volume.

I am going on holiday the week after so I need to put in a super solid workweek to give me peace of mind that I can sustain this after I get back.

[X] Car, closet and room are all in excellent condition and have been since I cleaned them. Clothes that have not been worn in a year/won't be worn ever have been donated to a good cause (1.5 LARGE rubbish sacks worth)!

Not having the weight of "I really have to do something about this mess" on my mind is just one less thing to worry about before I go to sleep. This is the kind of person I want to be moving forward, so I will resolve to maintain them.

[X] Improve my game with the help of creating study cards by posting trouble spots and review them daily, in addition to coaching sessions.

I know have 73 PLO study cards, up from some number less than 20 at the beginning of the month. I am very familiar with a lot of them now, I can't believe that I thought some of those spots were confusing when they show up now.

I made good progress with my PLO game this month, punctuated by a session with my new PLO coach. However it wasn't all that productive and rather superficial. He reviewed a 30 minute session I played in which I didn't have that many interesting spots, everything I was doing was fairly standard and I was playing well.

In future, I'm gonna take a set of theory questions/tough hands to the coaching so there is always something of substance to get into to make the most of the time and money.

What now?

Well, from tomorrow onwards I'm going to be busy as heck so this week I'm going to relax. No alarms and no set goals, just get up when I'm ready and be in the best condition for my final 4 performances.

I'll write about November goals(including more details about my music plans) when I get time, for now I'm going to try and put in some decent work days, go for a couple of runs so I'm not totally unfit and have a blast singing, dancing and generally making a fool of myself ;)

PokerStrategy.com status is not equal to financial wherewithall, only the ability to not go busto over immense volume and/or at max rake.

TB has been awesome at not going busto for a couple of three years now. :f_love:

WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH ME AND THIS BLOG?

Hey guys! Joseph is finally over, after months of blood, sweat and tears it's finally OVERRR!!!

I had an absolute blast peforming it for everyone, and am a little sad that it's all over now that I've gotten closer to the cast in the final few weeks. Closing night was great, after party was sweet, after-after party was FUNNN I'm still buzzing from it (and still exhausted) actually....I won't forget the downsides though, I'm almost certain now that my sleeping issue was in large part due to the stress of the show as I can't remember the last time I awoke at 4am. Once the performances started I was totally confident the show would be great and sleep was fine.

I didn't go back to work today as I spent it catching up with neglected choir buddies that weren't in the show with me, which was another great day/evening filled with amazing thai food and hilariously embarassing parents of the said choir friends!

So, joseph was a good 12-15+ hours a week that is now completely open, what do I intend to do with this extra time? What do I feel had to suffer as the rehearsals kept piling on? I'll look at this like I look at my weekly goals.

Was planning on having lots of relaxing blog time this evening but just got caught up in conversation and now it's 11:30 so I'm gonna be quick.

-I want to spend a bit more face time with my friends, the last week or so has made me realise that. Tying into that I want to expand my cooking horizons from Spaghetti Bolognese and Generic Stir Fry to more complex Indian/Thai dishes and have people around for dinner!

-Devote a few of those extra hours to poker. I'd say the most important goal to me is to really get this ball rolling so I can have total peace of mind pursuing my other passions.

-A bit more general unassigned gaming/TV/animewatching relax time as I'm seriously behind on some truly great shows.

-Music! That youtube channel I've been talking about for a while...I think I'm at a level where I'm not embarrassed to show the world what I've got! It'll be a good learning experience, I'll get even better in the process and maybe even gain some (more) fangirl stalkers! Also I'll be making my return to country music club this wednesday! EXCITEMENT!! Don't worry, you will know when that first upload goes up, I will spam the hell out of that shit in my blog and coachings LOL!

What now?

This weekend is a LAN that rolls straight into a weeklong holiday with my mates at a friend's bach. Shit is gonna be TIGHT! I haven't had a real holiday in a loooong time and I think I'll be able to really enjoy it without any guilt as I've made a real effort to get poker on track the past month or so.

I better set some goals anyway this week so I don't get too lazy. After I get back I want to figure out how much real, actual efficiency I'm getting during the time I assign to work. I tried using a program "RescueTime" to measure how long I spend on poker/study etc. but it doesn't seem to be working that well and I often forget to deactivate/activate it when I have breaks and it just becomes super innacurate.

To increase my efficiency, I have model a working week for myself (will be the week of the 21st of November), I'll take note of exactly how much time I assign to doing stuff, I'll use HEM to measure how much volume I'm putting in hour wise and then find out what can be trimmed down. There are other aspects that I feel are a bit wasteful also.

Regarding the morning walks, I feel like I could cut the time in half and still get most of the benefit. I'm going to try a new 15 minute route to get my head clear before breakfast.

Regarding more intense fitness, I'm going to wait till after my trip to go back to kickboxing. It's quite expensive, not just the membership itself but the petrol money spent going 3-5 times a week adds up and also is an extra 30 minutes of driving each day I go there. I'm considering getting my own heavy bag to train with and go to technique classes once a week maybe to keep polished. Stuff to ponder.... Till then I'm going to do daily runs.

Music-wise, all I want to do this week is learn the two new songs I'm singing for country music club on wednesday! Practicing/Testing out recording equipment for youtubing purposes will commence after my break.

I've finished Bugs PLO series, a lot of it was "oh yeah I sorta knew that already/seems common sense" but overall it was a great read and made me more confident going into each session. I'll be skimming it again before I go into the advanced hwang books for anything i missed the first time.

This Week's Goals!

-Morning Walk FTW
[X] [X] [X] *X

-Run after lunch
[X] [X] [X] *X

-Post hands and study card those spots for memorisation later!
[X] [X] [X] *X

-Read bugs before first session of the day
[X] [X] [X]

-Get those songs memorised otherwise I'm going to look like a total dick on stage LOL
[F(had the words up there with me, was awesome anyway)]

Big TLDR;s as promised

Baller to be,
TerrorBlade
