OH. HAI!!!

Got back from the trip with mah friends two days ago which was a super-awesome week that in hindsight was much needed.

This week was originally gonna be a test week to see how much time I put into various things like studying/playing etc. but since I got back from the trip at 4 on sunday, went straight to a friends 21st beach-party which went till 10:30 at which point I was totally destroyed, I decided not to set an alarm and catch up on the ludicrous amounts of sleep debt accrued over the past week.

So I was meant to post the blog yesterday morning (monday) except I made the crucial mistake of closing the browser window because I'm a boss like that, losing a good hour of progress. Instead of being spurred on to write it up again quickly, I was in "can't be fucking bothered at all mode" instead went out for lunch to catch up with a friend! That turned into an afternoon and by the time I got home it was time to start preparing dinner for a couple of friends I had invited around, then straight onto choir for an evening of practice for our Mozart's Requiem concert.

At this point I'm ready to go to sleep in my car (it's 9pm), but then someone mentioned those magic words, "Carls Jr.?" and I just couldn't say no. It's this epic fast food/burger place and I felt like I hadn't seen my choir peeps in forever, nek minit I get home at 11:30 after dropping what seemed like 17 people home.

PIX OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN

Aight, aight... So there was some of this....

...many of these ;)...

...SO. MUCH. WIN....

...a metric fuckton of sweet, sweet this...

....and a short but sweet amount of this..

All in all it was a one fine holiday. See if you can spot a wild chenny8888 in those pics

What now, eh?

Well, since I didn't allocate the time for it I never concluded my last work week. I managed to nail all the goals I set out and even though I didn't allocate any for friday I managed to get in a solid work day and go for a run etc. anyway for BONUS POINTS!

Country music club was tons of fun as always, although because it came so close after Joseph finishing I had so little time to memorise the lyrics and had to rely on the crutch of having music in front of me. Regardless, I felt I delivered a good performance anyway and will be going again TOMORROW after another couple days of cramming lolol.

Since the inception of this blog, a few things have become apparent:

-Setting standards to reach each week increases quality and quantity of work done by a huge margin

-Daily exercise is sooooo important for my both focus and general mood levels. I never feel more pumped than after an hour of kickboxing. My toe has been given enough time to heal and I should start back next week to see how it goes.

-Ties into the above but everything is just better when I'm eating healthy. The habits that have been ingrained in the lead up to Joseph as a result of the abs challenge are here to stay

Non-poker wise I've expressed interest in starting a youtube channel and also playing...

...which I've been anticipating for a looong time. It's installing now and I'll be damned if I'm not clocking in several hours of sweet, sweet gameplay today.

This week

Okay, there will be work done this week, but my main focus is going to be getting the groundwork for this youtube channel settled which will be mainly getting familiar with my recording equipment and software as well as practicing and singing a lot. Also, SKYRIM!

I will play poker in the mornings and sing/experiment in the afternoons. Probably will end up putting in some good hours in the evening too poker-wise.

-Morning walk
[X] [X] [X] [X] [X]

-Pre session ritual of study card review and either reading learning material or reviewing other people's forum hands
[X] [X] [X]

-Review my hands post-session and either forum them or save them for coach
[X] [X] [X]

-Afternoon run
[F] [X] [X] [X] [X]

-Not sure if this is going to be possible but...have first youtube video uploaded by sunday. There's a crazy amount of work to be done for this one, but mainly learning so it's easier in future.

Cheers guys,

Some things about stuff

I've realised a few things since I last made a blog post.

Firstly, if I don't set a specific goal to make a solid effort to get my weekly post out BEFORE Monday that it's meant to govern, then I am generally less motivated, lose precious time experimenting with what does and doesn't work etc. I had ample opportunity to get it written up this past Sunday but I literally forgot, then I am being hit this week with 3 hour choir rehearsals 4/5 weeknights this week in preparation for our Sunday concert and on my solitary free day (Today at time of writing, wednesday) I'm having some friends around for dinner and board games. Currently I'm waiting for them to arrive so I'm doing some writing now.

I didn't anticipate the torrential onslaught of voice rapage and so the thing I wanted to most get done last week (get my first youtube vid out the door), incomplete for other reasons won't be done till at least friday of next week as the next day after the concert I'm visiting relatives for a few days.

Secondly, from my initial impression (about 3-4 hours of gameplay), Skyrim is shaping up to be a mighty fine game. I love the look, the sound and the game in general just feels epic, in traditional Elder Scrolls style. My only gripe is that until choir is done for the year (SUNDAYYY) I will have very little time for it

PLOHU is fun and good. Inb4 PLOHU is the devil's game and I quit poker because of it. I just checked my results and after 5k hands I think I'm running quite well, and am winning decently. I still feel like my 6-max game is wayyyyyy more solid but I simply am not seeing the results yet, but I'm improving every day and maybe an "a-ha" moment will come sooner or later..

I initially set out 30+8 BRM for it and by that metric I could have started taking shots @ PLO100 two stacks agooo OMGGGGG! I will commence PLO100 HU next time I sit down for a HU session.

Last week's goals

I'm not going to go into each in detail this time.

Fitness

related stuff, I feel safe wiping my separate exercise goals from the blog. Maybe I'll consolidate or just remove entirely as they have become habit. The morning walk is pure routine now and there is rarely a day where I don't either A. go for a run B. do some other workout or C. play badminton which counts for a run and a half.

Another thing re: fitness, I was going to go back to kickboxing this week, instead I've switched my focus. I still really miss it and will go back probably next year some time but for now I want to increase my strength and maintain fitness with sports + running. My upper body is proportionally weaker than my lower and I think my kickboxing will benefit from a bit more upper body strength. Also my toe isn't 100% yet.
Till next year, workouts + cardio/sports, YEAH!

Youtube video

So I spent thursday afternoon "grinding" out my first song singing it over and over while accompanying myself on the piano (after 3 hours of special coaching i.e. TERRORBLADE REQUEST LINE + WENDY SPECIAL GUEST OH SHI-)...

I used friday afternoon to do some test recording, but I was still making way too many mistakes as I'm still kinda n00b at piano (learned later in life) so I'm considering recording piano backing and singing over the top which would allow me get the piano recorded in maybe 3 tries then the singing in a few more instead of "multitabling" and fucking up every 10 seconds.

Because of the insane amount of rehearsals leading up to this sunday's concert I'm not gonna put my voice under any more strain that it needs to be and just put this off until afterwards. It's a little disappointing but I failed hard on this goal because I overestimated my skillzz but now I shall approach it in a different manner, shouldn't take more than 5-6 hours combined to get it done.

Poker

This is weird, though I technically completed my goals, I feel I need to mix them up because I had a horrendous work week. Basically I was still reeling from my holiday and it spilled over significantly into even thursday/friday and found myself lying in bed at 1am wide awake as the minutes and hours ticked away. I'm more or less settled now and have gotten up before 7:30 every day this week thus far but yeah, I'm searching for a way to quantify how much work gets done in a week.

I can use HEM to see how much pure volume I put in and supplement it with manual timing of my sample hand browsing/study card reviewing/hand analysis to see what sorta work I put in. I started this on monday and it will be interesting to see what a cross section of a full week looks like. I figure I can use these numbers to try and "beat" them each successive week and trim out wasted time in the day.

This week (it's friday LOL)

Even though I didn't have my blog post ready to go with all my checkboxes I managed to at least go for a run/badminton every day this week as well as the morning walk as well as get plenty of study done. Compared to before I think I'm far more productive even without the blog but I did lose potential opportunities to compare goals and see what works and what doesn't.

When I look at the hours played/studied on sunday it's going to be quite low as this week I had 12 hours of choir rehearsal + spent effectively half of monday taking care of a 2-year old at a playground by the beach (not disastrous, but awesome, the amount of attention from hot mums/caregivers...just wow.. I might have to borrow him in the future ) and to TOP IT ALL OFF I picked up my dad who is visiting from Melbourne, Australia for 5 days and spent time with him!!

I'll see how much I can get in on saturday and sunday but between celebrating my brothers birthday tomorrow and my concert/afterparty on sunday there ain't gonna be much time. After that though...insane amount of free time in evenings to get that extra volume/music stuff done (skyrim).

Next week and beyond

I'm going away from monday-wednesday to visit relatives with my dad and brother so it's certainly not going to be a productive work-week. The internet may or may not be awful so I'm going to abstain from goal setting for next week. It probably seems slack but the week after I am musical free, choir free, country music club free (finished for the year now) and I'll be able to focus on getting fucking good at PLO.

I've nearly made 100 study cards, some are sooooooo obv. now I might start pruning my database because they're too easy and have been internalised.

So, I shall see how many hours of study/play I get in this week and compare it to next-next week which should be super solid.

December Goals

Car's still tidy, room is beautiful (even looks a little bare...I moved my piano and recording equipment out to the lounge so I don't tilt my brother who wakes up at 2pm), those habits are locked in.

It has become quite clear how strong the correlation between getting out the blog post half way through the week and it being a sub-par workweek.

-Get out the blog post EVERY SUNDAY that governs the following week, tweaking and refining the best ways to get me productive, using hours played and studied each week to maximise time well utilised.

-Get the youtube channel off the ground, I don't want to name a number of videos, but at LEAST one and I will be happy

-At least one coaching session with my new coach

-Reach 200k VPPs on stars for the milestone bonus

4-tabling plo25 and 50 yields a LOT of VPPS, I fully agree it's not anything to be remotely proud of this year, it's just what happened and where I'm at so.....

it's not that bad is it? i heard every hand u cap out the rake etc so u end up getting a nice amount of VPPs still.

of course you're 4tabling though so it becomes a lot smaller

NOW IT'S OVERRR!

The concert was fantastic, there'll be recordings up on youtube. Mozart's Requiem is a a beautiful masterpiece - a total pleasure to perform, I'm gonna have that music going through my mind 24/7 for a while...Christmas after party was fun too! Except for a small engagement on the 21st of December choir is done till next year!!!!!

Focus now, poker, music and games!

Last week

Nearly ever evening was taken up by choir practice, monday was a write off at lunch time for secret reasons at this point, friday was also a half day (spent time with dad) and the entirety of sunday was my concert + xmas party. An extremely untypically full week and I managed 23 hours of volume and 5 hours of study time which should be a VERY easy number to beat NEXT week (not this week as I'm away visiting relatives monday-wednesday.

This week

Well, there are no guarantees that poker will be playable at our hotel so I'll abstain from my normal goal setting this week and resume the next week, yeah anti-climatic but what else can I DEW???

Oh yeah, took shots at 50c/1$ PLOHU, lost a couple of stacks but I'm not fazed, more updates on that later.

Enjoy your week guys!

SUNDAY BLOG ON THAT IS RIGHT ON TIME FOR ONCE

As I begin to write this, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a friend so that we can grind through some Battlestar Galactica together while nomming on some quality burgers/kebabs or whatever we decide.

I had a great week, my dad flew over from melbourne, caught my concert last sunday and then me/him/my brother tripped out of town until wednesday to visit our nana! Internet was godawful so poker was impossible, thus I had a very relaxing time, playing board games with my brother, watching "It's always Sunny in Philadelphia" and formatting/installing stuff on my NEW* LAPTOP COURTESY OF MY DADDY <3 :)!!

Well, it was his old work laptop but to me it's new and I have found a great purpose for it! I moved my piano + recording equipment out of my room and into the lounge so that I can sing/play before 2pm (usual time my brother gets out of bed LOLOL) and I needed a PC to hook up my stuff to, which is where this laptop comes in!

Here's a picture of my sweet setup.

This past week

I purposely didn't write goals for "last" week because I knew 3 full days would be complete and utter write-offs, but what went down anyway? Well, I didn't get any more study done than last week, but that is a barrier to be SMASHED this next week!!

I mainly focused on getting way ahead of my VPP goal early so I'm not too stressed about having to play too much FL later on to get the points.

I managed 29.25 hrs of volume and 5.3 hours of study, for a total of 34.55 hours of work, and that is minus three full workdays. Why is this number so high? Does that mean next week is gonna be 60 hours (maybe)?

1. I put in a crazy session on friday, HEM says 10 hours of volume, which also happened to be my best winning day of all time by a factor of 2, I shipped about 4k$. How did this happen? Well, from about 7:30am-9:30pm I was either playing poker or breaking to eat/run/shower/toilet. My brother had to basically pull me away from my computer to go get some frozen coke with my friends (there was some dead money on the tables, I HAD TO BUST HIM!!!).

I have come to the realisation that I should sit at FLHU tables all day erry day. Most of the winnings were at T/20 -> 20/40. I've even deposited on a couple more sites so I can get a better chances of opponents and plan on having these open while I play/study PLO.

2. I put in lots of volume this weekend. I've played Skyrim twice since I installed it (just checked, 5.8hrs total game time with 0.8 in the last fortnight eek) and while it's a great game I simply haven't had the urge to play it since then, even though I've had two full weekend days where I could have...In fact since Joseph I haven't been playing many games at all (except the week long bach trip of CONSTANT games), instead I've been feeling the pull of poker, and when I'm in the mood I play piano and sing. I think this is a good arrangement personally!

Next week

I think I'm gonna keep it simple this week, having a lot of goals that have become habits seems a little redundant. The walks, runs and even the study related "per day" goals don't feel useful anymore. I think I will completely do away with the fitness ones as I don't feel complete as a person if I don't do them now.

I'm gonna try something from Jared Tendler's book and keep a journal of how I think my mental game was each day, what were the possible causes of the tilt I experienced and to what degree did I experience it, rate my play and how diligently I studied and even keep track of distractions and how they affected my daily work numbers.

The overarching goal this week is to maximise productive work time, the number of 34.5 hours is gonna be easy to beat but I want to smash it. I'm sure 60 is possible but I'm gonna start modestly and go for 45 hours of volume + study with at least a 25%/75 study ratio! Last week I was very volume oriented, mainly cause I played limit, but I'm gonna watch some more videos etc. to make it happen this week.

Oh yeah, the other main thing is to get out my first youtube vid. It's gonna be interesting juggling getting the work hours in and getting this stuff recorded I have a feeling one or the other might be unsatisfactory but it's all a learning experience ;)

-45 hours of work including at least 11 hours of study,

[ ]

-Keep a journal every day rating my play and mental state

[ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ]

-Get my premier youtube video out the DOOR by 11pm next sunday!

[ ]

-One more thing, spend time pruning my study card database! My PLO study card DB is nearly 100 cards now, and I'd say at least 20% are totally redundant ldo spots for me now so reviewing the cards in there take a bit of time but will save time in the long run!

[ ]

Almost can't believe I got this out before Monday!
Thanks for reading,
TerrorBlade

I remember these two hands very distinctly, I marked both of them for analysis in fact!

The stats I had on you were like 50/30 or something

I figured out I had to get in the QJT on the flop with heart and FH backdoors, even if I'm always up against KJT it's breakeven I think.

With the QQ vs KT98 I remember distinctly the feeling of "please don't have set + better FD". I'm actually not totally sure what the best play is in my spot there, you seemed pretty laggy so I thought I might have FE (whereas against a TAG I'm up against Top2+FD or better that he's just going with) and in my mind at game speed I felt I couldn't be that far behind.

With hindsight I'm only flipping or worse, really sucks when you've got similar straight draws + a FD, if I had K high FD just I get it in there NP imo, with 9 high fd maybe I'm just better off folding.

PLO is so fun and it's cool learning new things every day Thank you for saying hi, see you at the tables!

Image FTW I guess! :f_biggrin:

To me, first hand seems a bit forced. You do have FE but I can easily call IP with whatever hands I want because you usually have FD + some kind of straight draw, maybe ATxx with FD, KT9x with FD, QT9x with FD. The thing is, I don't really expect you to c/r bluff pot there ever. And if you are not bluffing it's an easy AI for me while I crush the board because you are not folding. I think raising smaller, like $3-3.50 and calling a 3bet or even c/c flop is better. The stacks are deep enough that I can call a lot of my hands IP and put you in a very awkward spot on later streets if you c/r pot.

Second one I would never 3bet OOP 200bb deep with that hand. I don't expect my opponent to fold anything and if I miss I'm OOP 200bb deep. In this hand I think my best play is to flat and get you in an even more awkward spot on the turn. If I had more ways to freeroll another JTxx, like 2 BD FDs or a flopped FD then I like getting it in. As it is I still have 6% chances of scooping on the flop. :f_biggrin:

LE: Btw, I don't think I'll see you at the tables too often. I'm whale hunting usually! No reason to battle good players while you can get 2-3 50+/0 at a table imo...

please don't get it in on the first hand. c/c is seriously best on that board, equity vs NFD + overpair + blockers:

As 5s Ad 5d 526 64.15 294 35.85 0 0.00 0.641
Ks 9d 8d Th 294 35.85 526 64.15 0 0.00 0.359

equity vs BARE NFD (not getting it in, b/c flop only):

6s 5c Ad 5d 467 56.95 353 43.05 0 0.00 0.570
Ks 9d 8d Th 353 43.05 467 56.95 0 0.00 0.430

be super careful with wraps (even ones with crappy fds) on drawy boards. i know you're doing swimmingly vs naked sets, but you gotta think about vs his entire range.

2nd hand: pre is marginal, but postflop is definitely super standard. IP you should play it differently (eg if he check/raised you i would flat).

CLEVER END OF WEEK TITLE

This week has been interesting... I tried a new approach after going on my recent HU bender and decided it'd be cool to always be sitting at my HU tables while I play/study PLO. As a result my study/volume ratio has suffered as I would pause everything else every time I got a HU opponent.

My usual workday would be start play PLO as long as there aren't great 6-max tables for me to grind my remaining VPP target, it seems study has seriously fallen by the wayside. Even my PLO volume itself suffered, with only 11.5 hours vs 35 for holdem (over half of it HU) which is not ideal because my main goal is to get good at PLO as fast as possible.

However.... it has certainly been profitable. I think the "problem" in this situation is that I need to spend a decent amount of time playing LHE 6-max to get the VPP target, if I could spend that playing/studying PLO I'd have a good balance between making money in the short term and improvement for the switch over, so maybe in the new year I will be able to make an informed decision on how to apportion time.

Last weeks goals

Work time
I managed beat my target of 45 hours of combined study/work with 41.5 hours of volume and exactly the same amount of study as last week with 5.3 hours of study for a total of 46.8. I can do better... it will be hard next week as I haven't done my christmas shopping/have got a bunch of stuff planned for nearly every evening OH MAN OH GOD

So what am I going to do about this imbalance? Like I said in my intro above depending on how HU pans out I might not need to play 6-max at all next year so naturally time will flow into learning and playing of PLO. As for next week I will make a concerted effort to get more study in there, there's nothing better than getting balls deep in some equity simulations, DAYUM!!

Mental Journal

Epic fail. I wrote entries for monday and tuesday, but for every other day I had this weird "can't think of anything to write" feeling. Because of the weird new structure of sitting at HU tables and playing PLO in the mean time, I was constantly switching games and almost worked in "microsessions" where bad feelings didn't have an opportunity to accumulate.

Tuesday was important because I identified an important leak of mine and that is continuing playing players that I have already identified as "too good to beat rake" both when I'm up AND down against them. When I'm down I'm "waiting for a big hand so I can get even" because when you're down you're bound to get positive variance soon AMIRITE? When I'm up I'm "waiting for a big hand so I can end up more in the positive".

What usually happens is I play an extra 30 hands than I need to, if it turns out badly I end up in a worse mental state, it's just overall EV- and I managed to avoid it for the rest of the week but it's something that I've been doing since time immemorial and I've never acknowledged it consciously.

I'm gonna give the mental journal another go because it could help me find other leaks, even if I'm not 100% on to writing it.

Prune PLO Study card DB

Literally didn't think about this once this week, isn't too much work I shall get it done next week.

For those who don't know, this channel is going to be mainly musical theatre covers, but I quite like this song so I started off with that. Work has already begun on my second recording and with some luck I could have it out next week

NEXT WEEK

Let's make this a baller work-week, I doubt it will be possible given the shenanigans I have this week and Sunday is CHRISTMAS but I SHALL TRY MY BEST!! I will dial it down a little and shoot for a little less considering what week it is.

-Fit in 40 hours of real, actual work in hectic christmas week.

-Prune my goddamn 100+ card PLO database of frivolous ldo spots

-Make a meaningful attempt at keeping my mental journal, trying to find root causes of my tilt when they pop up.

-Get out second video for youtube channel

I'm curious about your study cards. Could you give us an example, and can they be for all variants or just PLO?
