I can feel for the Grinders, losing money when its their main source of income and getting such short notice of the changes.
It would be a bit like me going back to work tomorrow and my boss saying "sorry Roo but you are going to have to take a paycut this year as I need to make more money"
I would have to make a decision to stay and put up with it or leave and go somewhere else.
I agree I dont think the sit outs were a great Idea, going back to my work scenario I would have tried to negotiate a deal before I quit through dialogue.

I Think 2011 has been a very very bad year for poker, lets hope it can pull its self back on its feet this year and change things around.

About an hour before it happened the Pokerstars rep on 2+2 made a statement answering some questions from Star's point of view and stating that any attempt to interrupt the games would be treated as a violation of the ToS.

Stars were more than ready for the attempted sitout.

Those who tried to block high numbers hof tables were kicked off the tables and eventually some had their playing privelidges removed altogether and when a banned player on 2+2 PM'd the Stars rep about when they'd get there account back te response was basically "We haven't decided yet"

So, overall it acheived next to nothing aside from maybe stirring up some bad blood for any further negotiations.

I can't say I blamed Stars, they said they were willing to negotiate new rake structures with a group of people this month but they went ahead with the sitout anyway and, like it or not, Stars has every right to protect their business. Try doing that in a casino and see how far you get.

I wouldn't have minded but the guys sitting out can't even come to a consensus on what they want, aside from the obvious "You make less money so we can make what we used to", which no sane company is going to do btw...this was just badly planned and executed from start to finish.

^ this is certainly your interpretation, and as a PokerStrategy representative it'd be really peachy keen for you to look at the situation a little more objectively.

The implications of what happened can hardly be summed up as completely devoid of sound logic and good intention.

I agree, the protest went poorly on both sides. People went crazy sitting out on a billion tables, and stars responded by restricting or ban hammering everyone including people like myself who chose to sit out on just their regular volume.

I actually went as far as to tell stars that I would be participating in the "sit out" days in advance. They gave me no indication that the repercussions for doing so would lead to a possible account ban or table restriction.

If the changes weren't announced 3 days prior to their implementation I'm sure the community would have had much more time to understand them and come to a consensus on the revisions they'd like to see.

Its very easy for you to stand back doing absolutely nothing but criticize people for trying to get what they believe is a sound process for implementing change and a fair deal from the poker room.

I actually agree with boomer2k10

I agree with him too, but not entirely. Some of the things he's saying are very biased and somewhat insulting. PokerStars shares the responsibility here. To an extent, the release schedule for these changes was also poorly planed and executed.

Also, deciding to protest something you disagree with is not an easy thing to do. This conflict doesn't start between two groups. It starts when a person realizes that they can't just sit back and do nothing. People who simply get angry and react are not protesting, they're just pissing in the wind. There's a difference, and its an important one.

Agreed! I would say lots of Grinders would have made financial plans based on the 2011 rakeback deals, I think it was very unfair of pokerstars to bring in these changes without much notice.

surely they could have given more notice than this and then they would have had time to negotiate any protests or unhappy customers.

Btw this has pretty much happened to me in the past 3 years.

First off bonus incentive scrapped, then pay frozen for 2 years followed by 2% pay rise when inflation has been 4-5% for the past 3 years.

At the end of the day the first thing a corporation is going to do is cut costs and that usually means Staff and/or benefits.

Yes it is my interpreatation as someone who works in a corporation that has been heavily affected by the recession and has had to cut costs/increase prices, has been put at risk of redundancy and knows corporate attitudes.

When Stars said they were willing to negotiate what would have been wrong with delaying the sit-out? Yes the timing utterly sucked on Star's behalf but the hysterical, confused reaction didn't help either.

Stars have in the past had good customer rep and if there was sufficient outcry that they're willing to negotiate on rake. even undoing their changes due to public outcry (not a sitout) and VPP structure they may also have been open to other changes. Instead despite this concession there wasn't even any talk of a delay, it went right ahead.

I'm not in any way sitting on a high horse and as far as being a Pokerstrategy representative I don't think my arguement is trolling or unjustified in any way. It's simply another side of the arguement coming from someone who understands both sides of the arguement so I am looking at this objectively, especially given that the rake structures what were being proposed on 2+2 would have destroyed LHE games for good on Stars I don't think I'm wrong at all in critisising the way in which it was handled.

Both sides have to share blame in this. Stars' announcement timing was terrible and offered little in the way of good news, leading to a scenario where they had no choice but to turn the water cannon on protesters and even though there was legitimate complaints to be had there was a degree of rigidity shown by the people who sat out which is not going to work when negotiating with someone like Stars.

What I'm hoping is that guys like Hood and long standing regs from each community can meet with Stars at the Isle of Man with a concrete plan in place and work something out and that's the way it should be handled, and I'm more than willing to help them with that, either through representation or any kind of support they need be it projections or just advice.

Now the focus has to be on getting realistic numbers to the guys meeting with Stars and then to do some work on that

I'm in the construction industry, which has been hit very hard in the uk, so I know what you mean. I'm not disagreeing with you boomer, I just think pokerstars could have given the guys more notice.

I'm a recreational nl2 fishy one table grinder, so the changes dont really effect me :f_biggrin:

But I do think its important that even players like myself should make their views known and then maybe sites like pokerstars would be more inclined to listen and not make the same mistakes in the future. ie... Keep people informed beforehand instead of just making changes within days, and not giving players a chance to plan ahead.

I've mentioned this other places, but not everyone reacts to things they disagree with by simply walking away. If people have a lot invested or don't want to leave they tend to resist changes they disagree with.

Arguably the players with the highest investment in pokerstars are those most affected. Along this line of thinking its not a surprise to see these players resisting.

Right now I think many regulars at stars don't know about the changes. I think theres a strong chance that in a few weeks there will be more people who are sympathetic to the way players responded.

Lets be honest - Stars didn't *need* to take more in rake. Recession or no, they are making big profits and they are far from a 'cost cutting to survive' situation.

The point is that they *can* take more rake. For my game, limit holdem, they take by far the lowest rake of any of the sites. Sites like Party treat micro/small stakes limit much like a wheel at the casino - unbeatable, but fun for the punters that want some entertainment.

The lack of competition mean that Stars can take more in rake if they want to. They lost traffic last year due to the DoJ etc, and they also lost their main competitors. No sit out protest is going to force their hand. What we really need is some effective competition to Stars. Some site that is prepared to compete in terms of low rake.

At the end of the day no company wants to be on bad terms with a section of its customers and so I hope Stars listen constructively to the points put forward by the representatives that travel to the Isle of Man. Its important that the effects of changes are considered in terms of each individual game. A change that is acceptable to the mass of NL grinders may make conditions intolerable for a FL pro, for example.

Well played with that comment, trolling people who are trying to get a better understanding of the situation and get involved in a serious discussion, must make you feel really good about yourself
