With all the respect, sir, I think you're having too much emotions for too little samples!

Other than that you've reached your monthly goal even after unlucky shot at $109s so I would call that a great month.

Also about that matter of bb/100. Keep in mind that you can't compare ROIs of different % rake games. For example it's easier to beat $109s than $55s just because you need to beat less rake.

I hadn't considered the effect of rake - that's a good point. Thinking on my feet I'm happy to concede that rake does affect ROI. My suspicion is that, nevertheless, rake levels across sites/games are not so different as to remove the strong and accepted link between overall skill level and ROI. For example, rake on Party versus Stars seems to be typically around 1% more. But we would expect a 5% winner on Stars to be able to make at least as much on Party, despite the slightly higher rake. In short I think the biggest determinants of ROI are a player's skill level and the strength of his opposition (assuming rake levels are not significantly different).

With respect, I think you did not perhaps mean to say that the $109s are "easier to beat" than the $55s. I'm pretty sure anyone with significant experience of both limits will disagree with you. Rake for the $55s is $5, i.e. 9.1%, compared with $9 for the $109s i.e. 8.3%. So if skill levels on both Limits were identical then of course the lower rake on the higher limit would make higher ROIs possible. However plainly there are more decent regulars playing the $100s, hence the expectation of noticeably lower ROIs despite the slight reduction in rake.

Yeh, of course I only meant rake while all the other factors being equal. Still expected ROIs on the highest limits are very low so that even 1% in rake difference should matter.

But on the whole I would agree to Milan more and say that overall bb/100 isn't a very significant number to look at in SNGs. It should have some correlation with the ROIs but blind structures, different rake, etc. would make it a bit useless to compare over different sites.

Btw, I was surprised to see that Party games have similar hands/game to Ongame. Just to make sure, the numbers you stated are of 6 max turbo games? And how long (mins) does such a game take on average?

No, the numbers I stated are for all of the sit and go's I've played. That includes some HU, the majority of 6mx, and FR. Some are turbos, some normal speed and a few (at the beginning -- maybe 500) were super turbos.

The vast majority of 6 max games I have played were normal speed games. (There are around 75 of the $109s that are turbos and around 500 super turbos that I played when I first joined the site.) Of the 2000 or so normal speed 6 Max games I've played, the average duration was 34 minutes.

It's definitely beginning to look like we can't draw many conclusions from bb/100, but let's see a few more samples first.

Thanks.

Tim, i've heard that the high stakes STTs are very difficult to beat due to so many regs grinding them and next to no fish, so your ROI drops significantly and most regs are breakeven. I was just wondering what your plan is taking this into consideration? I don't know what limits this happens since i'm pretty much a STT fish But when you get to a limit that is, for lack of a better word, unbeatable, or you have an extremely low ROI, what would be your plan? Would you grind these games for the rakeback, drop down to the highest limit you can beat for a decent ROI or would you switch games like many pros have done over to cash?

Also, considering your [new found?] love of walking why not come up to the Lake District and walk the Keswick to Barrow with me? ;)

Wriggers, my good man, you have hit on the fundamental difficulty that faces good SNG players once you move beyond the midstakes. In all honesty, I don't know what my long-term plan should be. Beating the $100s for 2% would still bel worth around $5 per game - including rakeback - so that, variance and bankroll considerations aside, it still makes sense to play those games. However it may indeed be that the mental discomfort of -$5k swings is sufficiently unpleasant as to render worthless the marginal utility of that additional profit.

I don't think it's necessary for me to beat the $100s in order to be reasonably comfortably off. But it's fair to say that it's unlikely for me to be able to make enough money to consider myself "well off" (whatever that means) without beating a game where similar amounts of money are at stake.

I've no objection to playing cash games for a living but to be honest I find it difficult to imagine that I would be able to beat the games (e.g. NL200) for a decent enough win rate since my overall impression is that the same solidity that makes high limit SnGs unbeatable also makes mid/high stakes near unbeatable (at least for someone of my, shall we say, moderate abilities).

As to your suggestion of a walk in the Lake District, let's kick it off with Skype - it's high time we spoke! Why not PM me.

Ever thought of PLO cash?

Although I guess if you wanted to stay away from cash there could be more money at the higher stakes in MTTs and HU SnGs and the like, although the swings would almost certainly be even bigger there. I guess it's all down to you finding your own balance between profitability and enjoyment of the game.

PM'ing you my Skype as we speak :)

Excerpt from the Directors' report:

"Overview

The second quarter of the fiscal year has produced satisfactory profits, albeit somewhat below those forecast.

Q2 Graph

Q2 Financial Results

Total Expected Revenue: $6092.52
Total Playing Hours: c 278h
Hourly Rate: $21.91/hr
$/Tournament: $2.88

Average tournament buyin increased slightly, from $32 to $36.5. However approximately 400 tournaments fewer were played during the second quarter, largely due to ongoing health problems. The "benchmark" earnings target of $2000/month was narrowly maintained.

Q1 & Q2 Summary

The modest earnings of the second quarter require us to downgrade our annual income expectations very slightly. In last quarter's report we were willing to make a conservative estimate of $30,000. Looking at total earnings over the first two quarters of the year, as depicted in the graph below, provides a reasonable means of estimating annual earnings.

Q1+Q2 Graph

Total Q1+ Q2 Earnings: $14,589

This permits a revised annual income estimate of $29,000.

Q3 Planning

As per our Q2 plan, play has now commenced at the $109 limit. Due, however, to a poor start at that limit - particularly at Full Ring (FR), the Directors recommend that play be limited to 6max games at present in order to demonstrate first the ability to beat those games (where expected ROIs have consistently been higher than at FR). The Directors are content that gradually increasing the average buyin (ABI) remains the best means of increasing profits for a given volume, subject to ensuring at all times that there is an objective expectation of profitable play at higher limits.

Q4 Plan

Given only modest progress during Q2 it appears reasonable to revise our Q4 planning slightly so that we aim to finish the year having achieved the capacity for average hourly earnings of $30.

Nice little excerpt.

but what actually made me post was this:

I've no objection to playing cash games for a living but to be honest I find it difficult to imagine that I would be able to beat the games (e.g. NL200) for a decent enough win rate since my overall impression is that the same solidity that makes high limit SnGs unbeatable also makes mid/high stakes near unbeatable (at least for someone of my, shall we say, moderate abilities).

meh, not true. nl200 isn't that tough and fwiw 21.91$/h is not a lot for a winning reg at those games... But ofc it's a whole different ball game when moving to cgs. I'm not too sure that sngs are as unbeatable as most ppl tend to say: e.g. if you play hu-sngs, most players you play vs are fishes, not regs. And i don't see a reason why that wouldn't be the case in sh & fr sngs as well.

I love your reports, Tim. Also, I wouldn't call the winnings modest. The money you lost on high stakes is an investment in your future, so keep up the hard work and I'm sure you will be more than fine :)

And I do agree with moving to highstakes (eventually).

Solid numbers, sir!
