I play pub poker from time to time and generally see the same few faces across a couple of different venues and there is one person in particular who regularly takes the piss, out of me and my game. I generally try to ignore it or take it as friendly banter and give some back, but lately it is beginning to ware thin.

The guy in question is arrogant enough as it is, being a doctor and thinking he is above everyone else, but in addition he has had a few good live poker scores and now he assumes he is God's gift to poker. This is further fuelled by some of his friends who seem to worship the ground he walks on.

My question is how best to deal with this because he recently ridiculed my game, whilst I was in a hand and he had already been eliminated ( I know I should have mentioned this at the time, but his retort would have been something to tune of this tournament is mickey mouse anyway).

I don't know whether this is just standard banter for him, but it really tilts me and I'm close to taking him outside and beating the shit out of him next time he does it. However, I want to avoid charges of assault or a criminal record as I'm trying to apply for the police force and feel powerless to do anything about it because of this.

Any advice?

This guy knows his stuff. That is actually his goal: to tilt you! It's hard but you should ignore him. If you could make him tilt that would be better but just try to focus on your game. He is the perfect guy a player with a good mindset can exploit imo. If his trash talking doesn't get to you he might tilt himself and that's really cool! _biggrin:

You should reconsider if police force is a right choice for you. Maybe armed robberies and street-fighting suits you better.

Obviously this guy (who is likely smarter than you) senses that for you poker is not merely a game of skill but a way to comfort your ego and feel powerful. He sees that you are mentally unstable and he uses it against you. It's not forbidden.

Physical assault however is.

Turn the game around on him imo :f_cool:

You can make a fool out of people like that real smooth and subtle... just ask the right questions/say the right things :P

The only way to do something about it is to outskill him in a hand and show him. Try to do a huge bluff and show him. But be very careful because this kind of play can backfire you very very easily.

Only one way to do it. Grudge match heads up for bankrolls.

well if he is not in a hand and you are, you could say to him to stay out of it while you are in a hand. And yea.. rly looks like he just want to tilt you and he succeeded.
If you know what you are doing in the hand, you shouldnt be worried about what some guy is thinks about it, so who cares.

Or...

Buy like loads of chewing, chew each piece one by one, sticking the last on his car wind screen, by the end make show all the chewing gum on his windscreen reads "bellend".

Only real way out of this one is to call on the Tournament director and get him to have a chat with him about him being a pain in the ass.

in all fairness ignoring him seemed to work pretty well, he got bored a walked off all sulky.

Contrary to my original post I am not an aggressive person by nature, but I think people assume because I am polite and friendly that I am weak.

I might challenge him heads up after reading some strategy articles and getting some practise in, because heads up cash is not my strong point.

I think I might just make him feel like he's being a huge arsehole in front of his friends.

thanks for the advice

Sound like the ignoring him is working for you but you shouldn't have to stand for insulting behaviour from this tosser.

If it's properly organised speak to the tournament director, in a casino you can call the floor and they will usually give a warning. When you do it just be confident in yourself and show that you're not intimidated.

Keep improving your game so that you are happy you are making the right decisions - that way you'll be less tilted by criticism you know to be wrong.

He sounds like he needs to feel superior to feed his ego, beating him a few times will help. Be careful about over-estimating your ability before you start challenging him to heads-up though!

From Freddy Nietzsche... From the book "Ecce Homo"

"My type of retaliation consists of following up the stupidity as quickly as possible with something clever... Metaphorically: I get over a BITTER episode by sending a pot of jam... You just need to do me some wrong, I will "retaliate", you can be sure of that: I quickly find some opportunity to thank the wrong-doer... or to ASK him for something, which can be friendlier than giving him something..."

+++++++++++

Villian - "Wow, you really played that hand badly."

Hero - "You know what, you are right. Thank you very much for the insight."

Villian - "You suck at poker."

Hero - "Yes, I do need some help. Can you coach me?"

Villian - "Uhhhh..."

He is jerk.

Hackbinder's advice sounds good. If you think you are better than him, you definately could ask him to play you heads-up. Even if you are worse than him, it might be good idea, might give you some respect from him.

I understand your problem mate, I hate this type of people so so bad also.
Try to provoke him, taunt him with the worse words you can think of. Try to make him start a fight with you, look for every opportunity to humiliate him or push him out of your way. Something like:
Villain (just dropped out of a tourney, leans close to a hero): hey punk, show me your holecards, I bet you got Aces again, you fkin luckbox.
Hero (stands up and pushes villain back strongly, making bump his head into a bar): excuse me sir, I'm trying to play now.
Of course this is bad behaviour, but what can you do... _cool:

Do not give this guy any more rent free space in your head!!! You choose to listen and put up with it, Choose to ignore him!!!! This will give you the power to act how you want to act, I work in construction and the banter can get a little fierce sometimes but its up to me how I react to someone! Your reactions and your emotions are all yours!!! make the choice!! :-)

when he is in game, go over and splash his chips over the table, then tactfully incite him to punch you through words or action, and he'll get the criminal record on your behalf.
