Hi, I am TheChessRunner(name of my chess Twitch channel). I am 32 years old(in my mind, I was still 31). I have played a lot of different stuff over the years, everything (semi) successful, but I took multiple (long) breaks. Mostly for non-poker-related stuff. A short copy-paste summary of my last blog from the previous comeback.
I started playing poker back in 2011 with freerolls to build a bankroll, mostly with mttsng without ever making a deposit. After Full Tilt went offline, I wandered a bit around with my bankroll, finally finishing on Pokerstars. I played some different formats, but mostly focused on 45-man. Playing 3.5-15 comfortably beating all. While making some outings in MTTs. Having a couple of 4-digit cashes, but also having some close misses. Remembering busting out after getting it in with AA preflop for the clear chip lead F3T on the ‘Sunday 530’. That still hurts a bit, deep inside :p( obviously should never have played that tournament, got in via a satellite). After that also had a run in 15-30 dollar 6-max hypers with up and down results, but not a big enough sample for conclusive evidence of how successful that was. Then the last comeback was on 18's. Looking at my last blog it looks like I went from 100$ to 1500 in around 5 months.
Some non-poker-related stuff. I discovered via poker chess and went up to 2050 fide this year. Now in a little slump, part of the reason I decided to give poker back a go. Getting in some diversity. I am a chess streamer and have also given some coaching over the years. Next to that, I was a very solid (ultra)marathon loper with a marathon time under 3 hours, and my peak fitness was in sub 2h40 fitness. Last couple of years, I have struggled with multiple unclear physical issues, but I am still running at a way lower level, and the dream isn't gone to one day get back to that level.
This time, I decided to go for cash games ( with a midterm goal to play some live cash games). Started on microstakes GGPoker 2NL, but 200bb deep+ante+there is a straddle option on GGPoker. So plays like a higher stake(not the level:f_biggrin:) First time playing on the site for me. Decided to switch since I don't seem to get strategypoints on Pokerstars. I haven't gotten any from GGPoker yet either(but only started Wednesday). First experience, the site seems a lot more gimmicky. The hidden costs are sketchy, but otherwise, I am mostly used to it.
Lessons until now
-need to cut all sorts of herocalls. Some of them have been just out of curiosity. Since these microstakes feel a bit like playing with play money, but I need to start with good habits and also need to get some good data to move up. If it is a strange line, it is probably just nuts or aces(even more important 200bb+deep)
Work
-I need a strategy for handling 100% straddlers. As far as I understand, it is very bad if you are in position of them. Since then, you always start EP preflop. I am now directly switching tables (even often not waiting on blinds since you have the antes), but I need to work on a consistent way to handle that. Also, get a handle on whether it is a sometimes/always straddler
-I need to decide on what BRM I am going to use. The idea is to move up very fast and deposit extra to fill in to have enough BR online. It is my first time ever depositing, but if I just take all my lifetime cashout alone, I would have comfortable BRM for at least 100NL if not more. I think it is practical to start from the microstakes, but I feel very comfortable that I can beat stakes. I don't see any sense in waiting until I have enough in classical BRM. But if I want to do that, I need to decide on some clear rules. Not super urgent, probably somewhere around between 10NL and 25NL, I would prefer to have something very clear.
First 1300 hands I am up 13$.
I assume that is not sustainable, although I was running bad in coolers(both KK vs AA and QQ vs AA 250+bb deep. The second I for sure should have found fold somewhere) and without some silly herocalls it would be a lot more.
Starting BR 20; Current BR 31.26(I know, it doesn't make any sense. I guess it is some wacky stuff with ev payout. I did that a couple of times in the beginning, but I was running under ev those. So makes even less sense. I have now stopped with that, keep an eye on it.
