Discipline Challenge

If there's one thing that years in poker have tought me - my worst enemy is myself :f_rolleyes:
And I'm talking about the lack of discipline. Mostly awful sleep schedule, which leads to bad decision making, tilt and prolonged frustating sessions.
It's insane, how fast a few undisciplined sessions can destroy a whole week's earnings.

So as a new year approaches, it's a good time to set some daily goals:
      • Sleep time no later than 1AM.
      • Poker preferably after lunch (from experience - early sessions are mostly frustrating).
      • Short sessions with breaks in between (no more than 500 hands a session).
      • Must play at least 3-4 hours a day.
      • Spice up a day with some Spin & Go and 6-max tournaments.

        * Punishment for discipline errors: next day's sleep time 0AM.

Have never done any challenge before, so hopefully this will add much needed discipline to my game :f_cool:

      * I'll try to update this thread at the end of each day (after Christmas), with detailed results and mistakes.

I can completely relate to this. In the past year, I've really woken up (excuse the pun) to the importance of restful sleep. Much like you, I'm a night owl and can sit in front of the screen much later than I should. Then suffer for it the next day with poor focus, short-memory and a bit easier to irritate. Three things that a poker player can't afford - or anyone else for that matter.

      I love the punishment too!

Good luck in your challenge, I look forward to hearing how it goes and to see if your poker bankroll improves with the better sleep.

I do think discipline is one of the most difficult skills to master, but I suppose it depends on where you start from as well. I start from a terrible place, improve, then collapse yet again - and yes, indiscipline will definitely deplete your bankroll very very quickly.

Good luck with the challenge, I wish you success for sure!

Regards and have a great (and disciplined of course!) New Year,

      Mal.

"Practice makes perfect" actually it's practice makes improvement,i've come to realize that if you don't turn your screen off you won't get sleepy(unless you haven't slept long)so turning off the screen and going to sleep rather then wait for you to get real sleepy and then go to bed.

I see your doing good so far keep it up !

      And happy new year

Guys, thank you for the support. Now I'm twice as motivated to do my challenge :f_cool:

      SLEEP TIME:
      • December 28th - 01:10
        * Punishment transfers for today.

      Sessions:
      • NL25 [550 hands] -27.6$
      • NL25 [510 hands] +2.7$

      Spin & Go:

Overall I was running so bad yesterday. But 500 hands discipline actually helped, when I started tilting at the last session.

GL with your goals! You seem to have a great mindset :s_thumbsup:

Now if only I could discipline myself to get to bed before 6am each night I'd be doing great! Will follow your blog and hopefully it will motivate me to be disciplined as well :f_ugly:

Yesterday was a perfect example, why I'm doing this challenge.
Lack of sleep (New Year's eve) resulted in a few frustrating sessions

I'm absolutely positive that sometimes some negative reinforcement can highlight the positives of a goal, and that can't be all negative...

Looks like you made your sleep time goal last night, let's hope for better results today!

Thanks, Ramble, I also think, that it's impossible to improve as a poker player, if you only have good sessions. Negative reinforcement is a necessary evil ^^

      SLEEP TIME:
      • January 2nd - 01:00

      Sessions:

And look at this beauty: the perfect trap gone wrong :rage:
I usually don't care about bad beats, but this one was especially frustrating, since I make this kind of trap only maybe once per month and it worked brilliantly.

      Tournaments:
      • Spin & Go $5 [2 tournaments - 2 small wins] +10$
      • 6max MTT (3.3$, 3.3$ and 8.8$) -15.4$

lol you know the saying "if you ain't got nothing nice to say don't say nothing at all!"?

@webhunky just keep going. perhaps you should change the punishment a bit to something that actually hurts you like "donate 5$ to an oragnisation of your choice" ;)

Don't mind him, that's my friend :ayfkm:

I thought about different kind of punishments, maybe if I start ignoring the discipline, I will think of another one. Since this challenge is mostly about my sleep routine, punishment to go sleep even earlier seems ok so far.

I just had the idea to change the challenge and add a positive motivation to it instead of a punishment. I don't know what exactly but you could do/buy/get something small for every time you manage to go to bed in time ;)
