Raise for value or way ahead way behind?

You should raise for value. Why would you think that you are behind? He cannot have a straight so only a better set beats you. However you cannot assume he have a better set. There are many more 1-pair and 2-pair combinations that he can have and any 2-pair combination will probably call you raise. You are missing out on a lot of value by only calling the river.

Also I'm not sure I like your c-bet on the flop. This flop hit his range quite well and he can call with a lot of draws.

I believe if the villian was slow playing trips on the flop then they would be the turn.

All draws missed and that would only leave 2 pair (AJ, A9) which you beat.

I would call and be happy with my play regardless of the outcome.

Edit:. I wouldn't raise for value as I think the only callers we would get beat us

I would not exclude a set entirely. He is out of position so checking the turn follows logically from the previous round since he check-called the flop. He might have planned to check-raise the turn but Hero did not bet. And I don't agree that we should just call the river. There are many hands worse then Hero's that might call a raise. In fact I can imagine he could call preflop with A9, AJ and J9. also If Villain is a weak player he will probably call a raise with weaker hands than a 2-pair.

I think just calling is fine. We don't have the nuts and I don't think that anything worse will call.

i say call. villain isn't capped at all so facing a shove is hard, just comes down to guessing how fishy he is

In my experience at these limits Jx is never folding without either two large barrels or three 1/2 pot barrels. One stab was to protect against overcards hitting their pairs and maybe him folding a 9 or 33-88, would have probably barrelled a blank on the river as well.

Well, the main point is that after the turn x he overbets river. That is why I like the call more.

Missed entirely that he shoved the river, thought he was betting normal size. Alright then calling is best.

He is not shoving but overbetting.

For sure, calling is best here as better hands raise

I'm amazed that raising is even being considered here.
