Hi, here is my piece of advice, apart of online poker (6.50 sngs at FT) I regulary play live tournaments up to roughly 100 usd buy in for recreational purposes mostly ♠_cool:
I am fully familiar with the low level of play at these games. There is no discussions that to beat it, you have to exploit the tendencies these fish generally have.
At first, if you are a cash player, you have a huge edge in the early stages, when the stacks are fairly deep (up to 200 or even 300bbs at some events) so the fish tend to limp anything and see flops, then they stack off fairly easily with any hit or a draw. As you are sure used to, pay very close attention to pot odds, the fish will not do any work for you here, they generally dont have a clue on how much is in the pot or how big is their stack, therefore their betsizing is easily exploitable if you just try a bit (lots of minbets, minraising, useless overbeting etc). So get a big stack early, when the fish are still in and can pay you off.
A bit of a problem comes with the structure, in cheaper live tourneys the blinds generally tend to increase very steeply compared to online, so you often get to push-fold phase in a few levels and you dont get much time to play the middle phase game. Think of it and be wary of loose calls of your pushes. Tight is right.
Next, try out a few low stakes tournaments online to become more tilt averse ♦
Tells are a marginal thing, there is much more to exploit than some eye ticks and the way someone eats cookies
The biggest problem of live tourneys, and thats why I think of them rather as a recreation, are high fees and ridiculously harsh payout structues, which combinated makes them in fact very hard to beat even if the players are so bad. It definitely will not make you much money, that becomes more interesting with the bigger stakes around 1000bucks, which are on the other hand usually a bit of a nitfest.
If you want to make money playing live tourneys, get a laptop and play a few tables online while you once in a time get a look at your hand at the live table
Best wishes, get the chips and let the fish at least pay you for your beers ♠_biggrin:
