Imagine you are out on a date with a girl you like, maybe in the car or in a tucked away corner of a restaurant. She crinkles her nose at a funky smell.
Would you prefer that she thinks you farted? Or that your breath smells like shit?

To answer your question I think there is no dilemma there, the fart is so much better it's not even close. Everyone farts, you just look at her and go ooops with a smile and guilty eyes and then she either smiles or well it's game other. However a shitty breath is another ball game, it makes the situation much more difficult; you could have done something about it and it's not gonna improve when you open the car window. She might infer something negative about your hygiene as well. So I am guilty and I FARTED!

Fart is really bad thing, we can avoid this, it's disrespecting thing.
But sometimes bad breath comes from illness not from lack of good hygiene, so I think it is excusable sometimes as you can't evade it.
I would prefer for her to think the smell is my previous date rotting in the trunk of the car
