I didn't put him on a backdoor draw at all as it was inconsistent his bets and the boards, so I didn't need protection as there's no 2 club hand he could play this way except QT or T8, but so be it.
But I didn't feel comfortable with trips and ace kicker either, so I didn't want to raise for value on any street... on the flop, a raise would have made me pot committed which I tend to avoid if possible. On the turn, as said, don't believe the draw but a weird feeling about this hand I didn't trust.
