Sample of pre-flop betting

Hand 1: Steal is standard and using minraise or something very close to it is best. Plan is to fold versus SB reraise and go allin versus BB shove.

Hand 2: 2.5bb would often be my raise size.

Hand 3: Calling UTG+1 raise is ok when BB also call. That make it more likely you will gain action if you hit to set. Fold if no one call that raise.

I always learned that i should raise bigger (4bb + 1bb per limper)
And in this thread and my other "post flop betting" they say raise smaller preflop?
What have i missed ?

i agree with ghaleon but at hand 2 i would raise 3bb at this limit from CO

4bb open raise size is ok in first blind level. E.g. 1500 starting stack and 10/20 blind level. Later on effective stack sizes are much more shallow so smaller raises does the job. So why to use smaller raises? For start you invest less to take those blinds down so e.g. stealing won't have to work as often to be profitable. Also with smaller raise pot size postflop will be smaller --> Possible cbet is smaller, more space to play postflop so possible postflop edge has more meaning. At start if you are not confident on your postflop game it might be best to use bit larger raise size preflop than ones many more experienced players might recommend.

Versus bad players you can also play in very exploitable way. E.g. if your normal raise size would be in some spot to 2.5bb you can raise with strong hand to 3bb or even bit more depending of villains habits. But this is not recommended versus competent villains. +1bb per limper is good rule in raise size most of time.

PS: I assume you have learned that 4bb +1bb per limper from some cash game article? Outside of first blind level(s) such raise size is definitely too big in sng format.

Hand2: 125 here. (2.25bb)

Hand3: call the raise. Fold if BB folded (unless the raiser is quite bad).
