I'm lost on the flop.

The Board seems to perfectly hit their calling ranges. So I chose to slow down, and continue only on non , non straight turns.

The 9 :spade: seems pretty innocent. I have to assume that a Set whould have bet the flop, after they check again I can rule out that one of them had tha plan of c'r the flop. So I bet, and don't know where I'm at on the river after beeing called.

Flop check is great.

Turn bet needs to be bigger, I would typically bet around $5 here. The board pairing is good for you, people are less likely to chase flushes or straights. However once you get called villain might have 98xx and is waiting for a draw to complete on the river before donking his full house so it's a super easy snap fold, this is never a bluff.

whould it have been a mistake on his side if he had 89 not to bet this flop?

Not really. It isn't a great flop for 89 either since there are tons of draws out there. It's much better to go for a checkraise in this spot because if you bet and get called there are around 31 bad cards to hit on the turn. (Any queen, jack, ten, 7,6,5,3 or heart all give you a tough decision on the turn).

Of course aces or kings aren't great either, so that leaves 4's, deuces and the 8's and 9's.
