Grabbed by Holdem Manager
NL Holdem $50(BB) Replayer
SB ($2,730)
Hero ($1,150)
UTG ($825)
CO ($1,725)
BTN ($2,570)

Dealt to Hero 2♦ 9♦

fold, fold, fold, SB calls $25, Hero checks

FLOP ($100) 3♥ A♦ 9♣

SB bets $50, Hero calls $50

TURN ($200) 3♥ A♦ 9♣ Q♠

SB checks, Hero bets $100, SB calls $100

RIVER ($400) 3♥ A♦ 9♣ Q♠ J♠

SB checks, Hero checks

sb is a Reg. 40k gs. 6%. Though b/e last 15k.
19/12. Sb steal 12%(!), 500 hands.

I don't know much about limp/stab range. Likely 35% limps but not always stabbing.

I expect him to complete weak Ax, esp give low sb pfr.

Main question is re turn. I don't expect to get called by much worse (perhaps 33/44 from time to time). But on the other hand, if we ch/b our hand becomes clear as 3x/9x and villain can vb all Ax with certainty.

So, should we float turn so buy free showdown and ensure we can't be easily bluffed or valuetowned?

Or should we ch/back turn with plan of bluffcatching river the first time vs this guy and folding in future if he shows Ax?

thx

just check back, you are really turning it into a bluff here. you dont have to bluff catch the river, if he bets river it should be clear that he has Ax or Qx .

Ok, thanks, seems reasonable in principle.

Two thoughts. One, if villain perceives our range to contain almost no Ax and if you advise checking back turn and usually folding river, doesnt bet/check/bet line from villain become super profitable?

Two, assume we checkback turn, what hands should villain vbet on this particular riv? Any Ax, any Qx perhaps even any Jx?

Subsidiary qn; we often talk about 'betting turn for free showdown'. Here, you say that would be turning our hand into bluff and I agree. When might we bet turn for free showdown and not be bluffing? (is it only where there are draws that villain might ch/c?)

chrz!

its not like our range is completely ace-less pre-flop. we dont want to call a limp/shove with A2-A7o so we would sometimes check those behind pre. im also not worried about getting exploited because hes not repping big aces either. he should also expect us to have some SD value after calling flop so if turn goes check/check and its a blank he should expect us to call (therefore only bet for value himself).

if im villain im betting all Ax for value on the river and maybe a KQ.

you cant bet for free SD here because the only hands villain will c/c on the turn are made hands that beat your 9x. so you jsut value-town yourself on the turn. betting for free-SD is usually something you want to do with a bit better SD value, maybe K9 would be a better hand to bet this turn for free SD. (that way you beat some of his 9x that c/cs but wont call a thin riv v bet)

In a nutshell, we can expect him to be somewhat honest on the river, b/c our turn check/bk usually eq. river call. And even if we expect him to bluff river sometimes, betting turn here just to prevent that is pointless since no worse can call?

Only thing I'm not sure about: in his shoes, why would he only vb KQ here?
i.e. if he thinks we're mostly 9x/3x (but ocassionally weak Ax) then either he vbets all Ax but nothing worse or he should vbet any pair higher than a 9? Maybe im still missing something?

yes, in a nutshell he should be honest.

its always going to depend on any specific meta you have. the standard line is to not bluff river in villain's shoes because hero has SD value and isnt folding in reg v reg meta.

maybe he can value-bet a few more Qx, but are you going to call river with any 9x? its just a leveling war, if he thinks you are calling river with 9x, then he vbets any Q. if he thinks you know his river bet is strong vs your flop flat then he doesnt want to value-own himself with weak Qx when he cant get value from worse...

you cant put a specific range on this hand, its 75% meta, 25% hand reading
