live poker: nutflush facing big bet

1/2 NLHE
Stacks-
Hero: $1,000
Villain: $480

Reads
Villain(UTG): middle aged asian. Bought in for max ($500). Fairly new to the table but does have his chip organized fairly neatly.
Hero (MP): Nitty image but have the big stack at the table.

Hero is dealt K :heart:K :diamond:
2 limps, Hero raises to $17 (fairly standard raise in this game, if I raise to $12 we will see the flop 6 ways), folds to Villain, Villain calls, 1 fold

Flop is 8 :heart:9 :heart:T  ($39)
Villain bets $20, Hero calls
Turn is a 8 :spade: ($89)
Villain bets $55, Hero calls
River is a A  ($199)
Villain bets $200, Hero calls

2 Questions:
1) Is it better to raise/fold the flop or just call and play it IP. I figured since we are soo deep, lets just call and reevaluate
2) Is River a call? He bet soo quickly. In live poker people generally see the absolute value on money (rather than thinking relative to the pot), and $200 is a huge bet for 1/2. But I am getting 2:1 but I just think I am beat soo often here.

Hey,

Dave plays live games more than almost anybody in some of the biggest games in the world and has a great knowledge about live games, so I'm going to pass this one over to him. He is currently in Vegas but sure he will post as soon as he gets a moment online.

Thanks
Patrick

Heyyyyy,

The flop is a call 100%, I assume he's going to be pretty strong when he donks but our hand is way too good to fold, also there is a lot of relevance to a 1/2 pot bet OTF, in general for weaker live players I'd lean AWAY from small flushes with a half pot bet (I think a small flush would look to c/r or bet bigger to protect)

I'd be thinking more sets (speshly with the UTG limp/call, mid PP
s always seem to show up here live) or a hand like Ah Tx/Jx/9x etc but thenn limp calling any of those hands UTG would be quite bad 9 handed and if this is a game in Vegas(?) it's actually not something you see much off in the vegas/US games as people, even weaker players tend to be much more aggressive pre-flop than you find in english live games.

I know 88 should be a similar hand to 3h4h but I would fully expect a set to bet smaller than a flush because a set just wants to call a flop raise whilst a baby flush will wanna 3bet (if that makes sense)

I'm pretty sure the turn is a fold, given how PP heavy his pf range is and how he bets again, seems really strong, our made hand is either crushed or pretty venerable and our draw is just to a pretty average bluff-catcher, if we river a heart and he bets again that is almost certainly a fold. He might be taking off with the Ah and something else but people really don't barrel off all that much in live poker (with some exceptions ofc lol)

As for the river it's a slam dunk fold I'm afriad, there is now nothing he can bluff with and his line is so strong, if he is bluffing here then let him have it, he'll prolly show you as well as they always do so will be useful to know, most of the time you're getting shown four 8s or 9's full though.

I think a general rule should be to fold to nearly every river bet you face in these type of live games, people just don't bluff.

Was this in Vegas? How you been getting on?

Firstly thanks for responding since you are in Vegas.

No, this is in Alberta, Canada. I have never played in Vegas but based on what I have heard our low stakes games are alot softer than Vegas. My wr is $38/hour through 600 hours. This game is 1/2 with a $500 buyin max (only a few of the good regulars myself included and a few rich fish buyin for max tho). This game in general is quite loose and I am almost always one of the tightest at the table other than the old nits.

I agree with you on the flop. Your comment about the turn is surprising but now that I think about it, I dont think a fold is too bad. Looking back, I completly agree on the river. It is definatly a fold. My thought process was kind of like "I have the nut flush, I dont think he would donk a set, I call" but thinking back it is very possible for him to donk a set here.

He ended up having A8s (FML).

edit: and thanks pleno1 for letting Dave know about my post.

wow A8, didn't see that hand cropping up.

Just goes to show you can never really rule anything out in these caard games

Great thing about live play is you pick up on so much extra information, most of the time you don't realize you're even picking it up - you just get to thinking "kinda feels X..." so you're instincts are very important and defo one of the most undervalued tools in poker, so often my friends and I talk about a hand and they say to me "why did you do that" and a kind of common response is "mmm, idk just felt it" and met with dumbfounded stares lol

So the turn is defo a spot to exercise some ninja live reads, but from reading it on the screen it does look a bit like a fold to me. Actually one important part of this hand is you trying to decide what kinda of hands this player would limp/call UTG, it's obv very stnd to give ppl mid PP's but the more off suit A*s and S/C's you see him limp/call with the more this becomes a call OTT. Obv if you dont know, which you likely wont you kinda have to guess, using the overall style of the game to aid you, but if you can make those sort of mental notes they are v useful for this type of spot.

Ya the bastard slowrolled me too.

Even tho I have some live experience (like 700 hours total), I still dont have amazing live reads yet. Live poker is soo slow, its soo easy to just go on autopilot and not pay attention for reads.

You should consult Phil Hellmuth to teach you his "white magic". :f_biggrin:

Even tho Hellmuth's CG style is very questionable, his ability to read people is definatly world class.

edit: Dave just read your blog. Have fun in Vegas and gl in your "50K challenge"

haha ty, the $50k challenge was about 4 weeks ago, results were, 2 days in +$45k, 5 days in -$10k, 6 days in very drunk, 9 days in still very drunk, 17 days in very very drunk, 23 days in horribly hungover, 26days in getting drunk again.

Hellmuths style is kinda flawed but at the same as you say they are some amazing parts to his game.
