Somewhat unknown opponent - played just weird, mostly loose passive with some weird aggressive moves here and there.

About the hand - I suppose I should've folded the hand on the flop as I had 4 out on 2 suited board with my two overcards.

But then he checks into me and I figured I should steel this pot. Am I trying to be too fancy here? Better to just take the freecard and fold unimproved on the river?

Hand converted with online PokerStrategy.com hand converter:

Play hand

$0.05/$0.1 Fixed-Limit Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BU with Q:h, 9:c.
6 folds, Hero raises, SB folds, BB calls.

Flop: (4.4 SB) 4:c, 7:d, 6:c (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (3.2 BB) 7:s (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls.

River: (5.2 BB) 3:s (2 players)
BB bets, Hero folds, BB gets uncalled bet back.

Final Pot: 5.2 BB.

Hi!

Flop peel is fine, your Q,9 outs seem relativelly clean and in addition you have backdoor potential and you are IP.

Turn is close and bet is not superbad since once he checks he has worse hands in his range and may actually fold some better ones...but...

... with exactly Q9 I like checking much more....

1)I wouldnt really think he has many better hands that will fold to your 1 bet(Ax will almost for sure not fold and Kx doesnt make that much sense...he donks flop and then checks turn ,maybe some K5,K8 but these will prolly not fold anyway)

2)against worse hands we are doing quite well,we may block outs and I preffer inducing vs these

3)we may easily be behind and taking a freecard is always nice

....these type of hands are the most tricky on boards like that,on one hand you have decent amount of SD value but on the other hand very little FE.

so Im checking and folding any river that is at least remotely connected with the board(club,3,5,8,T).On rivers like A,K,6 Im calling since his line doesnt make sense to have any better hand and Qx will be best very often. On rivers like 4,2,J its though and depends on the player(problem with calling is that on such cards he will valuebet very much, basically any pair or maybe even Ahigh and that is terrible for just Qhigh, you want polorised ranges with such hands!!) On 9,Q you should raise! to extract value from possible 4x,6x which are very likely
