You have 12 outs on the flop to a straight that doesn't put a flush up.

Given villain bet big on this flop I expect him to have a flush draw a lot of the time. It would be a terrible flop to bet without a draw because it's so wet.

I think the fold was correct because you're out of position, if you were in position you could try calling here as you may get a free card on the turn but I don't expect that to be the case out of position.

Incidentally I would also consider folding preflop to the 3 bet as you're not going to improve your hand that often with the pair in it. If you had something like JT87 then definitely I would be calling however.
