Hello,

My name is Daniel Kardefelt Winther, I am a PhD student at the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics.

In much of the media coverage today, online based hobbies such as poker, gaming or gambling receives a lot of negative attention. It is claimed to be harmful, a waste of time or "addictive".

My PhD project aims to criticise these arguments which are often founded on poor research using unsuitable methods. Furthermore, such research is often done by people who are not gamers or gamblers and therefore do not have a good grasp of the topic. The overall aim of my PhD is to give more legitimacy to online-based activities as a regular hobby.

This survey is the main data collection for my PhD. It will ask questions about your online poker playing, your thoughts and feelings about playing and not playing, some questions about possible negative or positive outcomes of your playing and also some questions about you. For those of you who are Facebook users there will be an opportunity to answer questions about this platform as well should you wish to do so.

The survey can be found here, and is expected to take about 10-15 minutes:

If you have any questions at all about the project or my survey, please do not hesitate to contact me:

Best regards,

Daniel

A bit of a full-blown personality test towards the end... I hope my personal insecurities won't discredit online poker :) Also, I felt that the questions about feeling good after playing poker are flawed since, at least for me, the obvious answer is "depends on how well I'd done in the session", and I can't just measure it as a "rarely/sometimes/often" value. I guess the questions are directed more at revealing a narcotic drive behind playing online poker such as in addiction to gaming/spending time online, but I think this is a bit more of a sport-ish matter like asking a chess player how often he feels good about himself after playing or asking an athlete how often he feels good after running.

...harmful, a waste of time or "addictive"...

No.

It is harmful, a waste of time, and addictive. And I love it.

Done, doing these psych surveys makes me feel incredibly introspective.

I wish there was a way to avoid the Psych battery, but everyone else uses them so I kind of have to or there will no comparisons to previous studies!

I am, however, trying to advocate a move away from psychological measurements as the sole determinant of positive/negative outcomes of any activity. It's quite a big part of my thesis, in fact, where I'll instead advocate that for online activities it may make more sense to have a look at what people actually do online before making any kind of assertion as to whether it's "good or bad".

Today, all you get are researchers who try to make claims about outcomes based on personality traits alone and that's just....lacking.
