Why did I start this blog
The reason I started this blog is that I decided to accept the challenge proposed by Gordon (Raskolnikov) in his video series « Champions stand up one more time than the rest » video1 - video2 - video3

My poker career
During my time as student (many years ago ;)) I’ve played draw poker with friends, rather in an amateurish style. After the university, I forgot about poker, essentially because I had to much work, it was difficult to find people to play with and I didn’t feel confident enough to play poker in casinos.
My interest in poker woke up again with the internet poker and I started to familiarize myself with Texas Holdem. Actually, I prefer NL MTT tournaments, but I seldom have the 6 hours you need to complete those. Therefore, I also play a lot of 6-max NL cash games. Unfortunately, I’m much worse at cash games than at MTT and I loose in the first what I win in the latter.

My reasons to join
I’m stuck at NL 50 despite lots of reading. It’s the application during the game which causes problems to me.
I like Gordon's style with a more global approach to the game.
Hopefully this will allow me to fix the leaks.

My beliefs
I know that I can achieve what I really do want: Most of my failures were due to missing commitment: I thought that I wanted to achieve something, but in retrospect I’s clear that my position was not “I want X”, but rather “I would like to get X”.
I’m also convinced by the statement « Champions stand up one more time than the rest ».
I also agree with the statement that « live is too short to listen to others ». However, I’ve I a tendency to take that to an extreme by not asking enough others for help.

My goals
My goal is to beat NL50 within 90 days.

My new habits
Just one to start with: every day I’ll dedicate 1 hour to study poker. It might not be enough, but I prefer to be realistic and become used to work every day a bit on my game, rather than to spent 3 hours the first couple of days and then become undisciplined and leave out one day followed by several days and then stop. More time will not be realistic on long-term since usually I work about 10h/24 - 6d/7 (I'm a little workaholic ;)).

Working topics

  • Equity analysis: either using the “Equity trainer” from Equillabs or just by trying out different hands on different boards against different ranges.
  • Inventing scenarios: I’ll take one of my big loosing hand and play around with it making different scenarios.
  • Opponent Analysis: I’ll start with my winning opponents to see what they do and what they don’t do.
  • Leak analysis of my hands.
  • Post hands.
  • Look videos and summarize them.

I am absolutely in. I used to play nl25 maybe I won’t be the best player in this group but I can guarantee that I would spend at least 4-6 hours a day working on my poker skills and playing on game. Only exceptions will be two weekends a month when I have uni. Maybe if we would have such a group every once in a while Gordon would help us. I've send you an friend invitation.

I like your idea of creating a discussion group. I’ve never done a session review before. What program would you suggest? I've send you an invitation in order to keep in touch.

Nice blog you have there; I'll read it more thoroughly this week-end. I’ll have to finish my homework first ;). I’ve sent you an invitation too.

Hi everybody,

Topics

  1. Started blog
  2. Summarized Champion #3 video
  3. Equity analaysis: medium PP in different situations (n=20)
  4. Player analysis (n=4)

Today I've spent 4 hours on the topics above. That's much more time I can reasonably afford, but I wanted to get the whole project started. Most time took me the player analysis. It’s really amazing all the information you can get. However I tend to get lost in the details and I find it rather difficult to generalize the pertinent information as showed by Gordon in his videos. If someone has an efficient approach to that problem, please let me know.

For the equity analysis I played around with a hand I’ve played really badly (see below) and it was not the first time I struggle with these medium PP.

PartyGaming - $0.50 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

I don't recall how many hands I had from villain when this hand occured. Actually I've for 92 hands following stats: VPIP/PFR/3B = 24/13/9; PFR from UTG 31%; AF= 3.
Actually, I've made following notes on him:
likes to play suited Aces
Bets for protection TPGK flop and turn on drawheavy boards, then checks on river
Slowplays nuts on flop and turn to checkraise thm on the turn
Checkraises turn also with TPBK
At the time this hand occured, I'v not seen any of his 3B hands

Hero (SB): 102 BB
BB: 100 BB
UTG: 104.5 BB
CO: 100 BB
BTN: 100 BB

Hero posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has J♣ J♥

UTG raises to 3 BB, fold, fold, Hero raises to 10 BB, fold, UTG calls 7 BB
3Bet seems standard to me

Flop: (21 BB, 2 players) 7♣ A♥ K♦
Hero bets 12 BB, UTG calls 12 BB
very ugly flop: cBet or not to cBet? with the equity analysis I've done now I realize that I have only 27% equity against a tight player! => check-fold flop against unknown?

Turn: (45 BB, 2 players) 5♣
Hero checks, UTG bets 21.38 BB, Hero raises to 80 BB and is all-in, UTG calls 58.62 BB
my play is just braindead: I don't recall what I thought there: I guess it wasn't a lot!

River: (205 BB, 2 players) 7♥

Spoiler

UTG shows 2♦ A♦ (Two Pair, Aces and Sevens) (Pre 33%, Flop 91%, Turn 95%)
Hero mucks J♣ J♥ (Two Pair, Jacks and Sevens) (Pre 67%, Flop 9%, Turn 5%)
UTG wins 199 BB

Looking forward to your comments, have a nice day.

Why you 3b utg w/ JJ? What worse can call you? Do you really like to play vs utg range OOP in 3bet pot ? its super mega easy call pre on F you can even play x/f vs utg range because it's mostly Ax sometimes Kx and rarely PP. You call JJ usualy to hit set vs utg range.

U probably 3bet way to merged against UTG, I tend to be very polarized there, like 3betting KK+ and some bluffs if its a regular with tight UTG range. This guy is even 22/13, I'd imagine his super tight from UTG.
You should just call there preflop, you dont just win when you hit a set, you sometimes ch/c your overpair and villain gives up OTT, or he doesnt even cbet on bad board and you take it down by leading turn.
On the flop you ask

very ugly flop: cBet or not to cBet?

. Well its actually a donkbet you are making there and yeah, it doesnt make sense. On such board his tight range hits very well and you should just give up directly.

As you played this hand it doesnt make any sense, but dont worry I think everyone from time to time does some random spew hands. Just learn from it, dont repeat it and you'll do good.

Thank you guys for your comments for this really badly played hand. I guess he called my my 3Bet with something like TT-QQ; ATs+; AJo+; KJs-KQs; KQo; QJs and I assume he would have 4Bet-shoved AA + KK, which would give me on this flop about 20% equity.
Just another question what kind of loose player would you require to 3Bet preflop: I've seen more than once players in UTG calling 3Bets with something like A5s?

Homework:

  • 19 equity analysis, still with JJ in various situations
  • 2 player analysis
  • Video/summarize: learning to learn #1

Kind regards, Walter

Dude people tend to open ~7% hands from utg. Why do you think he will call something like AJ or KQ? What kind of hands do you call when someone 3b you IP?

Hallo,
Thank you for the comment. Probably you are right and I was still too optimistic.

Regarding your question I would say that it depends on the 3-Bettor. Against a:

  • Tight 3-Bettor (4%=99+;AQs+; AKo) => call with JJ+ AK (or only QQ+?)
  • Light 3-Bettor (9%= 88+; A9s+; AJo+; JTs+;KJs; KQo) => call with 99+ AJs+ AQo+ (or only TT+ AQs+ AKo)

What do you think?

Have a nice day,
Walter

Hi everybody,

I was rather busy last 2 weeks: work +++ and ski holidays with the family.
Even if I didn’t update the blog I worked 13,5 h during these 12 days => goal of 1h/day was achieved. During that time I did :

  • 22 equity analyses
  • 5 scenarios
  • 5 player analyses
  • 5 video summaries (learning to learn #1+#2; Gap the mind: turning made hands into bluffs; Gordon's video "when to give up 3bet pots
  • 14 JJ hand analyses

As you can see, I’m still not able to do the required 10 equity analyses + 10 scenarios + 5 opponent analyses during one hour.
However, most time I’ve spent working on my JJ hands. They are one of my worst money losers and I’ve still not identified the main leaks. It’s very frustrating.

Program for the rest of this week (per day)

  • 10 equity trainings Big blind versus MP2-SB open-raises using the equity trainer
  • 5 scenarios
  • 2 opponent analyses

Have a good week
