how do i play this hand ? I check/called the flop and was hoping that he would get passive if he was just bluffin with set. Should i donk the river small or something ?

You played it fine.

Flop is an easy call since villain is going to try and buy this pot with pretty much any 4 cards. I would even go so far as to call a turn bet as well. When someone bets full pot on the button their hand is usually polarized to bluffs or the nuts (even then some players will bet less on the button here with the nuts since he wants paying off). It is possible it's a defensive bet from a vulnerable hand such as a set of eights or A8 that doens't want a straight to hit.

No value in a river donk since villain wont call with worse, I think you can just go ahead and fold at this point.
