Villain's a loose raiser PF so I decided to 3-bet.

On the flop I think villain could have an A, a FD or a smaller PP, so I raise him.

Turn I'm not sure, I think it's OK, villain would've probably raise if he had an A.

River is a mandatory call given the odds.

Your thoughts?

On the turn, his range changes in that there are no more small pockets in it. Hence, he has a FD or an Ax hand. However, given the preflop action, I don't see him calling too often with SCs OOP. Maybe KQs in , but more likely, he has an AK/AQ type hand. I'd not bet the turn. On the River, you get great odds, but on the other hand, I don't see any hand you are beating. I think one can fold here easily and safe the 10$.

I think AK/AQ are so unlikely here, I'm pretty sure he'd raise them on the turn. He's not so passive post-flop, and by playing the way he did I think he was either drawing or a little bit scared on this hand, so if he has an Ace, it's probably a weak Ace.

On the river, I know I'm beaten way too often but given the odds and the information I could obtain, I was willing to pay $10 for that information.

He had KK btw.

yes I would check behind the turn as well. There are these kinds of player min betting the flop (probably with a weak hand) but just can't let it go. Just remember it when you will have TPTK.

I made this play many times, each time thinking: how could he possibly pay a second barrel when displaying such weakness on the flop. But once they paid the flop, they will go with their end to the showdown. It costed me quite a few buyins...

Actually, if he was on Ax, I didn't bet turn expecting to make him fold his hand, but I don't want to give a free card if he's drawing. And I also thought it was quite possible he had a medium PP (maybe even small ones), that's why I kept the turn a bit cheap, but enough to make him draw unprofitably.

check behind turn - we don't have a hand we want a big pot with - and with this river(another overcard and completes the flush) I'd not call even a penny - you just beat nothing.
It's just a rule I try to follow in cash games - big hands, big pots; marginal hands, small pots - so with JJ I would rarely, if not never, second barrel here.

Faye, I think there are 2 flaws in your argumentation:
The first one is that IMO you are not ahead of villains range on the turn and won't get many better hands to fold; thus you shouldn't protect.
The second point is, that I don't like your bet sizing. You are right, he needs 4:1 to draw to his flush and you provide him odds of "only" 3:1. However, what about the implieds? Will you fold to a bet of say 40$ on the river (it's a 1/3 ps bet). If you call, he actually has the necessary implieds. Further, if you fold, I'd argue that your bet size may be different with weakish hands like JJ compared to a bet with a hand like AK - with AK you'd have to call a small river bet.

Yeah, I guess without pretty solid reads I'm behind his range here.

Well, with JJ, I'd fold to a $40 bet on the river, I didn't fold to the $10 bet just because I thought it was a fair price to see his hole cards and make a note on him. (And I still think it is, I won't fold getting these odds being able to get info on another player.)

But you're right, I'd make a bigger bet with AK, and I'd call a small river bet.

I've probably been trying too hard lately and making mistakes that I wouldn't normally make, downswings can be very mentally challenging. :(
I'm gonna be posting a few more hands later.

Thx for the input Thorsten, finchy and Cindy.

I know how you feel, downswings may influence your way of play. Sometimes you call just because you think that it is high time you won a hand.
