Hey guys, this was a hand I played at the local casino last night (1/2NL), wondering if I could have played it better:

Hero(Button): A10 offsuit and a $220 stack
Villain(Cutoff): $250 stack

Pre Flop: Everyone folds to Villain who limps, Hero raises to $14, Blinds fold, Villain calls

Flop ($31): 7spades J clubs 10diamonds
-Villain checks, Hero fires $30, Villain calls

Turn ($91): 2clubs
-Villain checks, Hero checks

River ($91): 8hearts
-Villain fires $50, Hero folds

What do you guys think?

Hey sand

Just moved your thread to 'No limit'. Might be a more suitable spot for it.

Regards,
Luke

hmm given that villain limped he's obviously a bad player. what is the reason for cbetting so huge on the flop? do you think villain will call you with a worse pair? because i can't see how a worse Tx hand can call vs such a big bet. instead i think you isolate yourself against Jx hands.

your hand is pretty weak, and if you bet the flop then it's gunna be pretty hard to get to SD if you take the line that you did. instead you could cbet the flop smaller (~$18-$24), barrel the turn and check back the river. if he leads river after you bet twice then we have a really easy fold and if he checks then we can take our free showdown. i really like this line if you expect villain to be a huge loose-passive whale. the only problem is if he has any brain cells then you are probably turning your hand into a bluff when you barrel.

an alternative line would be to check back the flop and bet the turn for a free showdown and give up vs any other aggression. your hand is vulnerable of course, but the thing is you only have middle pair so you can't exactly win a huge pot with the hand anyway and you have to really consider pot control over protection regardless of how wet that flop is. not really sure how i feel about this line though.

that's my 2c. and i'm interested to see some other thoughts on it because this is definitely an annoying spot. as played i think folding the river is probably your only option because you beat nothing.

I agree with this.

I would maybe consider calling $50 on a brick river eg 3:s, but on an 8/9/Q/K river I am definitely folding. Preferably we would have some info on how thinly villain value bets rivers, because there are some players who will always take a stab on the river when the turn is checked back.

his range is all over the place, a 3 :spade: could easily hit him, sure K/Q/9/8 are much worse but whatever, cbetting that big accomplishes nothing imo, as played fold river, I like cbetting 2/3 on the flop to punish draws and since this is a live game, I wouldn't expect him to fold any pair on the flop, so we bet for value+protection, on the turn that's the nut safe card, so we barrel again 1/2 pot, and we happily check back river for a winner most of the times.
