Flop: (2.5 SB) 5 4 4 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN checks

Turn: (1.3 BB) 4 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets, Hero calls

River: (3.3 BB) 8 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets, Hero raises, BTN 3-bets, Hero calls

Results:

Spoiler

9.2 BB pot (0.2 BB rake)
Final Board: 5 4 4 4 8

Hero mucked 8 K and lost (-4.5 BB net)

I've purposefully included spoiler here, was this well played or badly played by either me or BU?

the only thing i can think of that is wrong with this hand is that you could just as well have raised preflop with the BTN only one limping in. which is a sign that hes a bad player. other than that as played it was good.

well in some way you could find a way to fold the turn but I personally would probably always call the turn. mostly just the value if hitting a king is enough for me. odds wise im sure its terrible to call

There are many choices here. Both preflop, and flop as played, are borderline decisions because your opponent is in the drivers seat.

But there is one big mistake as I see it. Once you have checked turn (not necessarily a mistake) I think it is wrong to call. What's the plan if you miss? Calling down two streets with K8 high in a pot that is 1.3BB is ambitious. You get 3.3:2 for that if you call both turn and river. Calling in the hope that he is checking back with a worse hand on the river is optimistic. If he's betting anything worse than you have, he'll basically have to fire twice.

The net result is that you play bluff induce holding nothing in a nothing pot. (It is best done holding nuts in a nothing pot.)

Then when you hit the river, as played, I personally think you should donk. He'll check his A and stuff like that behind.

Overall, either go for aggression a la Avataren, or take the passive line and check and call at most once (on the flop) unless you improve. I think both ways are better than the line taken.

First of all you should have reraised as he's just limping off the button which means a quite wide range consisting mostly of hands he's shown on the showdown. little gap connectors like 64. please leave out the results for your further hands! it just irritates the handevaluation.

I like the way you played. check the flop to induce a bet by the hands i mentioned that would probably fold right away on the Flop or on the Turn but keep betting if you let him. On the River you make your boat and as he's certainly going for another bet with a straight or with 33 x5 22 against your Ax and Kx you can consider yourself to be almost always ahead unless the unlikely event of him showing slowplayed AA etc but you should not expect hands like pocketpairs 99+ to be in his range so checkraise River is nice!

It was just bad luck that he slowplayed quads but you gotta deal with it :)

Why are spoilers not ok?

If the judges can't help themselves but having a look, well, that's a problem, but I'm sure they can overcome their curiosity. But they aren't the only ones reading the threads.

Having a peek at the results can help other readers to identify points that they have missed in their own thought process, or points they don't understand in the judges reply. I usually first read the HH, think about it for a while, read other posters posts, then the evaluation. Lastly I peek.

having a peek at the results wont do you any good regarding hand evaluating. It only confirms your inner satisfaction. "oh i won so i did the right play capping river with measly two pair 4way pot"

evaluating a hand is all about the preflop flop turn and river play nothing else. as results only will affect your judging in a negative way.

the newcomers or inexperienced players will instantly look at the spoiler and results and adopt the result orientated way of thinking which is a bad thing to adopt.

The good players and hand judgers won't open the spoilers as they dont need the results to judge if you played your hand correctly or not.

Basically nothing good comes from spoiling the results as this forum is mostly read by inexperienced players. and some of us who either judge the hands or have a bit more experience.

personally I didn't open the spoiler because I have finally realized after over a year that results aren't as important thing as i once thought it was, to improve my game.

yes i like graphs and posting results yay i won xx today etc but regarding hand judging and improving my game im pretty religious about the fact that results don't have anything but a negative affect on how you judge your hand and own play.

for example doing a session review I play a hand preflop, flop turn and river. I never press that one more button which shows his hand. Just move on to the next hand.

Yeah, those are all good points. I'm not arguing against your points at all. But there are arguments in the other direction as well. The inexperienced players may be put off a little. Having spoilers might make the forums more readable for them.

The optimal way is to not look inside the spoiler, we know that. But that makes the whole discussion pretty abstract for a new player. It's like reading an advanced text in mathematics with no (or very few) examples. This is nice for the experienced mathematician, but is incredibly off-putting for the undergrad student. The spoilers provide just that, examples. They give practical examples of the application of theory of a single board texture + own holding.

B t w, I don't peek to get inner satisfaction. But I sometimes peek out of curiosity.

I'll quit posting spoilers (took it for granted it was the right thing to do), but I'd like to know what others think.
