I've been to Malta only once, but some quick tips:
It's a small island yes, but has multiple small "towns" - more like neighborhoods really. However those vary a lot (Valletta is for me just a touristic attraction and very old) in their building style and what you can find in them.
As a poker player you would most probably want to be in Sliema or San Julien's - that's where the new construction and most of the nightlife is.
