I read a blog in the news section by Daniel Negreanu talking about penalties given in tournament play and how warnings should be given first.One example he used was a NOVICE PLAYER CHECKING THE NUTS IN POSITION for example the board reads KQJT and it is checked to them and they check with an ace without thinking. Giving a penalty without warning, he writes, is absurd. My question is, I never new you were REQUIRED TO BET at anytime. WHAT is the player being penalized for and WHY? I am a new player and have never heard or read anything about CHECKING THE NUTS IN POSITION. Has anyone ever heard of this and if so can you explain it to me.THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY FEEDBACK

Weird rule, but it is instituted because this kind of play is suspicious of softplaying/collusion. Ie, if you are playing with a friend at your table, you'd check down as you want both of you to do well in the tourney.
But yeah, cant believe they penalized the poor lady for it
The rule applies to when you're last to act on the river with the nuts. Darwin Moon did it in the main event of wsop (2010) some years ago. His reason was that he was sure his opponent would fold to a bet, so by checking back he got to se his cards.
Originally the rule must have emerged due to collusions between players. You don't wanna see a guy with an A-high nut flush check back river against his best friends K-high flush.
I'm not sure all casinos follow this rule, when I skimmed through the net I got the impression that there isn't any consencus.
Another side of the coin is when you're chipleader on some bubble stage and you can raise every hand and getting folds all the time, because all are waiting for the poor shortstack to bust. If you happened to get in a pot with him, you wouldn't want a call from him on the river with your nuts, since you're winning so much every hand he stays in the tourney. I think that qualifies within the strategy part of poker and so should be allowed.

Interesting question. I understand the rule from that preventing collusion point of view. However my opinion is that this type of problem should be considered each time individually. Is the player that make the "mistake" a rookie, is there any reason to suspect collusion etc.
Btw. I don`t have personally any live poker experience so I just used a common sense.
