Why do players fold even when no one has placed a bet yet? Obviously, I am a beginner and my goal is to beat my dad by the end of the month. LOL! I need funds for Christmas.

Have you heard of blinds? If not I wouldn't count on beating your dad any time soon.

It is all down to the cards the players have got. If they don’t think they are any good to continue with the hand they will fold and wait for better one to come along. If you are just starting out I would suggest having in look at the basics here http://www.pokerstrategy.com/strategy/others/

People fold because to play you have to put money in the pot and is good if u pot money in the pot with a good hand not a bad one.
