SB: $23.64 (94.6 bb)
BB: $29.33 (117.3 bb)
UTG: $25 (100 bb)
MP: $78.29 (313.2 bb)
Hero (CO): $30.39 (121.6 bb)
BTN: $25 (100 bb)

Preflop: Hero is CO with A Q
UTG raises to $0.75, MP raises to $2.25, Hero raises to $5.25, 4 folds, MP calls $3

Flop: ($11.60) K 6 A (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets $4.75, MP folds

UTG- 25/19 over449 hands, AF 3.8
MP- No reads

Although MPvs UTG open is inherently strong, our perceived range is even stronger. When he calls I see him holding AK and setmines (seeing as though we're deep)

At least TT-QQ but maybe wider, possibly chuck in a few combos of AA and KK

On the flop we are either crushed or he's folding to any bet so at this point I want to make it to showdown but don't want to check back and run the risk of getting bluffed. I guessed I can one and done it?

Hi legand73

Preflop: have you taken into account stack sizes here before you 4-bet?

Postflop: betting flop has little to no value aside from you winning you the pot now from everything worse. Checking back gives him a free card but also the chance of paying you one street at least with mediocre hands. I'd prefer a check.

Are you thinking that we should make our sizing slightly bigger? or that we shouldn't be 4betting deeper with our hand.

If it is the first one how much bigger should we be making it?

You can say a bit of both.

When you see a 3-bet MP vs UTG you are already thinking of tighter/stronger ranges. When you get deeper people will be more inclined to call your 4-bet so hands that may fold 100 BB deep can call more now.

So your FE preflop is slightly lower and you have to have a plan for postflop if you do get called (like here).

Our decisions postflop are slightly easier because we are in position and I anticipate his range consisting mainly of pairs and strong Ax. Against pairs we can barrel (when we don't hit) on a board w/ a high card or two.

Obv as played I didn't choose the correct option but i'm concerned that if we check back flop we may be facing some aggression to which i'm not feeling overly great w/ our hand because he would be repping missed pairs (that turn into bluffs) or AK

Given the positions and actions you ought to expect very straight forward play here.

In other words i wouldn't run big barrels thinking that my opponent is floating me light.

most people call preflop in hopes of spiking something and they are happy to throw their cards to more aggression postflop (in spots like this).

So assuming we check back flop, we can make it to showdown pretty easy you reckon? Do we just fold to a bet thinking that we're up against AK?

Let me understand what you say here.

You are 4-betting AQ, flop TP, check back because you want to let him feel more comfortable and then fold the turn to a bet?

Haha ok so folding to a bet isn't great.

What I was thinking was more along the lines of: we 4 bet AQ, flop TP check back because we are ahead of his range most of the time but he still won't be feeling too great w/ his lesser pair and would only put more money in the pot with a strong hand (i.e a hand ahead of ours)

Maybe so but he has a chance to turn his smaller pairs into a bluff since we checked back the flop. And if we check back the flop we usually have a pair of some sorts which can be better than his lower pairs.

I suppose the key point is that our pair that is better than his, can't withstand pressure.

In his shoes I can imagine him thinking that while our flop checkback does look weak, perhaps we are trying pot control. Or that in checking back we try to induce a hand to try bluff us off our hand because we look weak.

Isn't that the case in many spots? he can think that we think that he thinks and so on?

We have to make a decision based on what we think is the most likely scenario given the information we have.
