The villain had a 100% steal percentage. Vpip of 25% and pre-flop raise of 21.

Should I have called instead, or have made a smaller re-raise?

Imo just call, even bvb you can't shove 40bb+. If there's been serious 3-bet wars going on, and you think you can induce a light 4-bet-shove then 3-bet-call.

I would normal 3 bet to 4k or so and call on a shove in a blind battle.
So you can induce action of worse pairs and A high.
Off course you need to have a 3bet bluff range as well against him.

I don't understand the part where I should put myself in a position where I am put all in. Would it not make more sense to put the villain into the same position, and hope he folds? I believe any sane person would have folded in his position, with AJo? I have a very healthy stack, so does the villain. There is really no need to gamble it all... by calling an all in. Am I wrong?

No, you are not wrong. This opponent just seem to be very spewy. Some players just like to gamble and you should make a note from these kind of situations.

I would 3bet pre to 3500, the amount don`t need to be that big when we are IP. And if you have a read he`s capable of 4betting light or that he`s calling 3bets light, then this great value 3bet hand.
