SB: $31.42 (196.4 bb)
BB: $16.32 (102 bb)
MP: $9.18 (57.4 bb)
CO: $16 (100 bb)
Hero (BTN): $20.11 (125.7 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with 7 7
2 folds, Hero raises to $0.33, SB raises to $1.44, BB folds, Hero calls $1.11

Flop: ($3.04) 4 8 2 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $1.92, SB calls $1.92

Turn: ($6.88) J (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $3.36, SB raises to $7.36, Hero???

Preflop: Standard open. SB 3bets 6,7% (10,1% vs Hero), so I decided to defend, even though his size was on the bigger side, but I believe it's his default size vs minraise.

Flop: Since he checked, I believe he has broadways mostly, so I decided to bet for protection. I think I should make it a bit smaller when it's for protection (that way it can even be some kind of a value bet vs broadways).

Turn: Not the best card for me because it hits his range in a bit (mostly AJ), but I believe he has more KQ, AK and AQ, so I decided to bet again. Again, I think I could make it a bit smaller. When he raised, my hand is probably not good enough for calling and I don't want to try to bluff him.

SB: 23/19/16/63(8)/1,5/1,4k (VPIP/PFR/SBvsBTN_RaiseVsSTeal/3betPot_OOP_FlopCB/AF/H)

What range would you put him on and what's the reason behind checking back?

Well, SB is defending depolarised vs you. You have 1000+handsample.
I think xb turn is better play. You have showdown value and by betting we turn it into a bluff.
As played, you should fold.

Villain can have JJ+, slowplayed 44,88, broadways, maybe some suited 8x, suited Jx..
I don't see many hands weaker than our 77 that will call our bet OTT. So we are turning our showdown value into a bluff by betting.
Maybe he will call flop with some AXs with BDFD or A8,A4,A2 but most likely he will not call turn bet with those?
So, what's the reason behind betting?

flop good for protection
check back turn going for sd or bluff catch river sometimes...
As played fold...

The reasons behind checking back is that we have sd value , there aren't fd's or sd's @ all, and he should have some strong checking range sometimes in this board...

As I said, at that point I think he still has some broadways and Ax hands, which I am ahead of (except JX hands, of course), but still have some equity against my hand. So, basically, I think I can bet for protection, but I think I should do it small because my hand is not a monster. The concept is - when you bet purely for protection, you should make it smaller, unless opponents start to exploit that, which I doubt. What do you, guys, think about it?

I do not like it with this hand.

It's also a sort of blocking bet because we wont be too happy to call 3rd pair if he bets the river, no matter the river card, which means he might bluff us. Overall, I think betting 1/3 flop and 1/3 turn would be a decent option here.

We do not have to fight for every pot and we do not have to invest more.

If we bet only for protection we will increase the pot and isolate ourselves against better hands and turn our showdown value hand into a bluff. That blocking bet aspect seems reasonable and I don't think it is terrible to bet small, but still I like checking more.

Villain's story makes no sense at all. It's either JJ or a big dumb slowplay (X-R with initiative is just weird). But if it was JJ, it was already a dumb slowplay (should have bet the flop for value) and the J made no difference at all.

Probably a bigger overpair being overplayed. Perhaps 88. Sometimes a very, very dumb AK bluff, maybe, but really? Why X-C, X-R when you could just cbet?

I would bet the flop - but smaller, half pot or even less, because it is dry as a nun's nasty and we only need to push Ax air out of the pot, which 1/3rd will do fine - X back the turn after the call, and decide OTR based on what hits. Probably calling medium sized bets on a brick.

Pre - if a guy is pushing you around / specifically targeting you like this (as indicated by the nearly twice as high 3bet%) it can be a profitable move to just leave the table whenever he is on your left. Personally I find that if I feel like I am being targeted like that by another player I stop playing my best game and take it personally. Now days I just flag them with a red mark on stars and don't sit on their right, as I just don't care to participate in levelling wars if I don't have to be involved in them - and you can always find another seat.
