Did I play the hand correctly? I think that the flop cbet was unnecessary...

Yes the flop cbet was maybe unnecessary. You should cbet less when you are OOP. If you were in position I would agree with a cbet.
OTR I recommend that you do not go crazy without the nuts. River raises are usually very strong. The board is paired so there are better hands possible.

When I face a spot like this I usually think: I don't have nuts -> no stacking off.

I agree with la55i. Alo think we could skip the flop cbet, but since we have a gutshot and probably a good amount of fold equity (he will most likelly fold all pocket pairs below TT (except 55, ofcourse).

With this flop cbet you do not achieve anything good. No better hand will fold and you pump the pot for nothing.
OTR with the paired board you should not play for stacks but just call the raise and make a note.
