So this tight aggressive player raises UTG+1 and everyone folds. Actions falls to me and I call for 0.04 more hoping to hit a set and get some value from his big stack. The flop comes [5h Qd 7s] and he makes a CB. I was putting him on AK or AQ and called as i was getting enough implied odds. The turn comes a 6 and i raise he calles and the turn is an ace which i thought was a great card because i was gonna get paid my AQ, i move all in, he calls and shows pocket aces. I am not sure if i made the right decision by calling the flop. I would also would like to know how would you have played my hand.

The call OTF is oke. the board is pretty good for your hand, haveing only 1 highcard.
I think the "problems" starts with the raise OTT. It's too small, I would make that bigger like 20BB.

OTR, I would (start) making a normal sized bet, like 50-80% pot but I will insta-call on a shove so I'm going broke here for sure. But I do think the shove is an mistake. Most other (worse) hands will not call a shove, but will call a normal sized bet. I'm not saying you could have saved money here, but you will gain more money in the long run.

You are ip so u can outplay ur opp so i dont mind call otf either. Ott why u raise so small? Def go for 3x at least. Otr u basically rep nuts and even aq would fold there so there is no point in shoving like that imo. Jut go with 1/2-2/3 otr. If he c/r we can fold imo. He is not raising aq vs our bet, he even hates that he has to call. So if he shoves into us we beat nothing = we fold.

You are contradicting yourself. You say utg has a strong range there due to being a solid player. That means he has a range that will bet multiple streets.Your 66 mean nothing against hes range so why put him on just the bottom of the betting range there?(AK,AQ as semibluffs/protection)Wil he cbet AA,KK,AQ,QQ,55,77?ofc he will. And what do you do on the turn with no set?there are no pot odds to call for a set,ad no implied odds since the utg range contain sets that beat you.So i think the best play is call preflop for a set and fold in any no set situation postflop. It`s nl 2,you fight the rake before anything else so stop herocalling and making fancy plays.Just play for value, bluff with your oesds and fds and that`s pretty much the strategy for these stakes.Ill leave this for you :

Calling pre flop is ok. You call to setmine.
When you don't hit OTF, I really doubt you have enough implied odds. Mozzek said that you are IP and can outplay your opponent. This is true but requires good postflop skills. If you don't have good postflop skills (and it looks like you don't yet) then I would just fold OTF.

Turn and river sizings look quite bad.

I don't think i made the wrong size turn raise. He is wrong to call me there if he knew my hand. he has to call 8BB to win a maximum of 100BB in the end, so he is 12.5 to 1 (1$ to win 12.5$), and he is 23 to 1 to make his hand on the river. I thought the flop call was alright, if i manage to get some value from him. As for the river I should have played it differently and maybe he would have just call(saving me some money).

Adrian Dragan there are way more combos of those hands then pocket pairs.
The flop call cost my 3BB and I am about 24 to 1 to make my hand on the turn so I can call profitably if i can take from him at least 65 more BB from him and i think i can get that much from AA KK.

Yes of course he is wrong to call you if he knew your hand, but the thing is, he doesn't.
You should protect your set and also get more value with it. I see no reason to raise so small. To call your raise villain needs only 18% equity and to be unexploitable he should be defending 56% of his betting range. You will get a lot of calls and you won't get the max value.

he has to call 3BB to win a maximum of 100BB in the end, so he is 12.5 to 1, and he is 24 to 1 to make his hand on the river.

This part doesn't make sense to me.

la55i thanks for the reply!
I had made some mistakes in my writting and I corrected them. Don't get me wrong, I also think I could get more value on the turn from KK AA but on that moment I was putting him on on AQ (mistake) and I wanted to give him the chance to continue playing (continue making a mistake).

You should protect your set

The mistake he would make could be larger but I want to make you one question: Is my turn raise a +EV play or not ?
I dont understand, I do the math and I'm getting correct implied odds to call on the flop or at least I'm really close.

How are you calculating your implied odds? You have to make at least 60bb more every time you hit and imo that is not very realistic.
You need 24% equity to get direct odds and you have 4%.

With that turn raise you give villain direct odds to call with 8 outs +. You could charge his draws and top pair hands more. Your turn raise is +EV but it is not max EV.

la55i thank you so much for your attention.
Can you help me to learn how to calculate equity cause I think I am getting the numbers wrong.
Do you mean by equity my chance to win in the hand if there are no more actions by players (percentage % of the time I win) ?

Just fold flop. You yook your odds and you missed... Just play it simple. You are never that much ahead and drawing really slim if you are behind.
As played raise alot bigger on the turn so you can pot shove river.

Yes. If we assume villain has a hand like AA (you would win if you hit a set) your equity OTF would be about 13%. That is because you have different ways of hitting a straight too, but then you have to hit both streets. Since there probably is some betting OTT, I think it is better/safer to calculate what is your chance of hitting a set OTT. Your chance to hit a set is about 4%. (outs / unknown cards) = 2/46

Then you compare this to your pot odds. bet/pot+bet = 3/(12.5+3) = 0,24
So to get direct odds to call you must win this hand at least 24% of the time to break even. You compare that to your hitting chances and you see it looks pretty bad.

I'm a bit tired so that might be a bit confusing :f_eek: if there is something unclear, let me know, so I can try to explain better :f_biggrin:

la55i It's very clear!
i used an online calculator and got the wrong answer because it took into consideration the straights.
I'm pretty tired too, to not figure it out myself
Thanks.

Isn't that too weak? I mean if I play like that I will never get value when I hit a set, because the villain will just fold whenever i call flop.

When he barrels how do you continue if you dont hit a set? If you start calling every flop and folding most turns you will get barreled away like crazy. Even if you turn a draw its hard to steal the pot OOP.
IP you can call but why bother OOP... You will have better pairs/OESD to call and sets, bottom two, gutshots and OESDs to raise with...

Maybe I am being a little nitty but its not a big deal if you fold, and it sux to "call and prey". :f_cool:
