Is it something strategic about them? Do they bore you? Are they no value? Are they too long? Are they not cool?
Just wondering why for MTT players who don't play satellites much, why don't they?

any game that exceeds an hour becomes boring, because of that I like to play STT SnG or at least 45players SnG.
What pees me bit off, is that Stars changed the structure of the sattys for Sunday Storm: so many hyper turbos, for me those are just "better gambling" that anything else, you cannot exploit your edge. But also other sattys are hyper-turbo, turbo-rebuy and such stuff on Stars which means: donkaments with huge gambling factor. But PartyPoker has some good sattys which I should play (more). And for SCOOP I will play sattys for SURE!
Not a tourney player myself but I did consider it. My reasoning was bankroll management. If I play a satellites that is just right for my bankroll then the target tournament is too expensive. If the desired tournament is in my buy-in range then the satellite probably too low looking at the hourly. There are of course exception of this rule - in this case mine would be an online satellites for a live event. It's either the convenience of the arrangement that adds value or the experience of a trip itself that will be unforgettable and justifies the shot and the bigger risk exposure. So it needs to either simplify my life or add something to my leisure. But an online satellite reduces my freedom because I am committed to a tournament much earlier. And to close an invalid stupid reason - I pay rake in a satellite to win the rake for an other tournament. Of course the sites could afford much more overlay with all their satellites!
I think satellites are also tough games to play the right way with a lot of ICM in it.
Especially around the bubble except if there is only 1 ticket to win.

- too many rebuy sats (on IP and Microgaming sites especially)
- too many re-entry ones on Party
I like the "deadline" ones on Stars though
I've given hyper sats another thought, and what frustrates me the most is that I might get stuck to my chair late at night 1-tabling a deep run (with a stack worth around my entire BR, i.e. a chance to multiply the BR with no danger of losing it) in an MTT that I've entered to rack up a couple of BIs worth of T$ at its sats during its late reg period.
Because of this, I might adopt a LAG style just to 'go big or go to bed' at Bounty Builders (where playing for the 1st place makes more sense than in the Bigs or Hots) and completely avoid sats to Bigs (too long) and Hots (with only 1-hour late reg and hence fewer SNG sats to each).
Surprisingly, the reg-to-rec ratio doesn't seem much bigger in sats to Builders than in those to Bigs, even though the former are much more convenient for regs due to the bigger traffic and the higher ITM in the target event.
I do play more sattys now but only on Titan, RedKings or Unibet.
On Stars and Party the low stakes sattys are (almost) all turbo-rebuy, hyperturbo-rebuy, hyerturbo, superturbo, that´s not playing, that´s gambling!
The gambling in hyper sats with 2% rake (very low by the modern Stars standards) looks affordable, though.
Another inconvenience I forgot to mention is that I'd usually have to reject condescendingly unfavourable FT deal offers because MTT regs wouldn't recognise me as a reg, whereas I'd probably be on par with the final 3 opponents at shallow 4-max play because MTT regs don't get nearly as much 2-4-max practice, especially in first-place-heavy situations like PKO FTs.
Edit: the probability of an unfavourable deal is fairly low in a micro MTT, though; I'm railing the top 3 of a $2.20 Builder, where 1 of the players agreed for an automated deal without understanding what was happening, then asked if they were playing just for fun from then on, and the other player dared to explain that they were still playing for the bounties, lost a ton of EV in so doing
but probably earned karma points.
Looking at the SNG sat lobby, I have one more conjecture.
It looks as though the 2x hyper shootouts are more appealing to the same LAG type of recreationals who prefer PKOs to 'vanilla' (conventional) MTTs, whereas those who prefer vanilla MTTs are more likely to want to qualify through an 8-max rebuy on-demand.
It's amazing that 2x shootouts are running to a wide range of Bounty Builder stakes at the same time, incl. those Builders that start in 1-2 hours. There are even more shootouts running to the Builders that are yet to start than there are to Bigs / Hots that are already running.
Also, the fields of PKOs tend to be bigger, which hints that there are usually more people willing to qualify for them.
Hence, paradoxically, it's probably a waste of time and bankroll for me to grind sats to anything but featured PKOs.
I can´t stand those "gambling donkaments", no matter if satty or not. Those hyper-hyper-re-entry-super-turbo-rebuy stuff is nothing else than bingo. I remember the good old days, there was a 10-man STT qualifier for Sunday Storm for 70 Stars coins. Or a 45-man qualifier for 2.20 $ ..... they were really really cool and I played them often and qualified a couple of times for Sunday Storm but now? Only supermegagiga-turbo-rebuy-donkaments.
(Sry, just let out my frustration a bit
)
I was checking them out on PP and I think they are not good value as you have to participate in a few of them (they are step satelites) in order to get the ticket - so if I add all that time ... I found it not worthy
I really love satellites, actually I guess is the best way to get rich in poker, cause people satellite like standard MTT, they want to lead. I won a 10k euro wsope ticket by several satellites from US$0.01...
So often I played about 4 $109 MTT´s last 45 days just cause satellites, coming from 1.10 -> 5.50 -> 22 -> 109
Are there any good books on this subject that anyone can recommend? I would love to read one and become more skilled at playing satellites.
Speaking of which, congrats to Barry on the release of a book on satellite strategy
Thanks Tony.
Obv I have done the book because I think it will sell well, but we legit think if it does it could be helpful to the poker ecosystem to have more people qualifying for bigger events.
Gonna do a fun exclusive promo of some kind just for PS members probably next week.
Problem of satellites for most (whatever they understand it or not) are BRM requirements. Starting point is that you should be able to have bankroll to buyin directly to tournament that satellite is for. Because whatever you play sat or not BRM requirement wont really change much. Also in general if target tournament is bigger than what one plays there is also question on whatever player has enough edge in it and also question if running deeper in it will cause scared money effect. Which usually will decrease edge further. Of course there can be exceptions on edge department as if some tournament has ton of satellites even on really small buyins it will likely soften field considerably. Though it also likely means massive field creating bigger variance. Or if its live packet then field in live is in general soft also. Well it has to be for anyone to reach solid hourly expectation.
Personally I play so few mtt that have rarely played satellites but they can probably be pretty good if pool is soft enough. Also I have heard in some occasions you could even have overlay in them if there is x number of guaranteed tickets.
