Nh, imo.

No point betting the river when you've been given the chance to see if your 88s are good for free.

Edit: On reflection, I'm wondering about the 2nd barrel on the turn. There are 3 hearts and an overcard now so there is a reasonable chance our 88s are no longer good. I can't see BB folding to the turn bet if he called the flop bet. Maybe better to just check behind and try to get to showdown as cheap as poss.

Sorry Maarten, but I think this may be a leak in your game if you NEVER open limp with pocket pairs. SHC says to open limp from early pos. with 22-99 - although I don't quite follow that all the time. Generally for me, if I am opening early position, I will fold 22-66, limp 77-99, and raise TT+.

As for the rest of the hand, it looks fine to me. I am putting villain on a 5 of some sort - because at this level, players love to chase any sort of draw. He might also have a 4 because these kind of fishes love to hang on to top pair on flop (regardless of what the rest of the board brings). Unfortunate that the 4th heart showed up on the river, although even if it was any other suit, I would've checked behind him as well on the river.

If he donk-bets you on the flop, I'd be raising him, perhaps shoving if he decides to overbet the pot.

NH, well played IMO.

How come... I would openlimp them if I had reads that the table is/was passive and there wasn't much raising preflop. Problem is that I almost never know this before blinds are too big OR I even get a pp.

And please tell me, what's the difference in openlimping with 66 or 77? I really ain't afraid of a set over set tbh...

Well I think I agree that if you limp 7,7 from e.p. you should also limp 2,2+ etc. The number of times one set is beating another is very few.

But on the other hand, personally I am normally limping any PP whether from early position or wherever.

It's true you risk getting raised if you limp from e.p., BUT:

1. this happens no more than 1/2 the time;
2. when it does you may have enough others calling to make it worthwhile;
3. it may only be a minraise - esp at low limits;
4. even if you limp from mp or lp, you can't be assured no one is raising after.

Overall, I think that when you do hit a set you win so much (and therefore have good chances to get itm) that it makes a few slightly loose limps worthwhile. I'd appreciate Chenny's opinion on this though.

Hi all,

Preflop I fold here. We can limp it at the 15/30 or 20/40 (is there a 20/40 on this site?) blind level. But at 30/60 with starting stacks we don't have the odds to given how often we're raised and generally how little we win when we flop a set (if it's a limped pot).

Flop I bet 150 to protect.

Turn I don't mind bet/folding (I like 200 chippies here) in position for the explicit purpose of taking a free showdown... so river I check behind.

Hi Chenny8888,

For clarity, is it the blind level that stops you limping here, or the position?

If the position, from which pn. would you limp?

we don't have the odds to given how often we're raised and generally how little we win when we flop a set (if it's a limped pot).

Won't it always be a limped pot if we're playing (low-med) pps? (I didn't think we were meant to be raising or calling raises with low/med pps?)

A combination! Basically at this blind level I don't openlimp, but yet 88 is a fairly strong hand, so from later positions I would raise it.

I would never limp this hand at this blind level with starting stacks from any position UNLESS someone had limped in front of me. I would raise it if folded to from about MP2 onwards (this is pretty tight too).
