NL16 6Max, protecting my range vs a reg

Above hand id prefer protecting my raising range, and go for raise on the flop. If your confident in how someones playing i think a raising range including, pure bluff, semi bluff and obv nuts is more profitable. I wouldnt play scared vs regs as if they are less likely to want too play against you (high variance) and will build up more of LAG image making it easier to get paid off with value hands

Pre-flop could be a 3bet against a LAG for value.
Flop check/call is fine. You don't need to protect your hand and if he has a over pair he has only 2 outs.
As played I would make a value bet on the river for sure.

I don't mind the check call on the flop apart from 98s villain doesn't really have any draws and villain might not open 44 utg and you block any Tx.Protecting your checking range and allowing villain to catch up makes sense on some flops but once villain checks the turn the river is a value bet imo.Villain can check back some Kx and might get sticking with 77 88 so we need to get some value on the river.Villain isn't checking the turn with KK and cant call a river check raise with Kx so check raising the river doesn't make much sense to me.Just make a smallish bet and target some weaker 1 pair hands and kx so like 1/3p maybe 1/2p imo

Betting the river is mandatory. If you check river - its to check raise, however, what hand would call your raise ? Only QJ that will shove over you. Every other value hand he might have like Kx/sets/two pair (highly unlikely) will bet the turn themselves

So, if he is a decent reg he would 1/3 the river with QQ/JJ/Tx for thin value and would fold to a raise - therefore you win 1/3 river bet.

now, if you bet 2/3 river - he still has to call all these hands, therefore - this is the most EV play imo - see in this case you would have won more on the river than check/raising.

As played he had exactly a hand that would have called you off - and it even turned out that he is more passive and would not valuebet Tx here - but be confident he would have called you the river.
